The actual mixtape isn’t what it used to be but every now and then a good one comes along. This one dropped last week and I can’t front to say I’ve listened to the whole thing yet. But seeing all these fairly recent Southern tracks compiled on tape saved me a bit of time. Plus, I know KDough don’t touch no junk and it’s hosted by the man of the hour, K.R.I.T. “Jewman” (Jewman, gahd#mn) is quite an audacious fellow, referring to himself in third person while explaining the excellence of his whip game. Say what you will but Bouldercrest’s best can manage to string together a good mix of words (“A is for the K when I’m trappin’ selling cookies, Try to take it from, man Jewman ain’t no p#ssy“) and Zay’s mini-symphony of sounds make this one an easy listen. The Gangsta Grillz mixtape series still prevails as a deal breaker in solidifying an artist’s independent grind and Drama’s connections with T.I.’s Grand Hustle imprint is one of the strongest in Hip-Hop. Out to pay the bills in a more practical fashion, Drama’s back with the 2nd commercial installment of Gangsta Grillz: The Album; a middling compilation that manages to get the least out of every one of its big name features.
