What makes a group successful? Is it classic albums, a slew of singles, commercial play with street reverence and high mark sales? If so, Naughty By Nature fits the bill with Hip-Hop’s upper crust. But it’s that harder to grasp the stratosphere where Treach, Vin and Kay Gee excel beyond mixed company.

The only way to solidify a spot in music industry outer space is with intangibles. There are no numbers, pie charts or bar graphs used to gauge legends. Over the past few years VH1 has done a pretty good job of highlighting upcoming or overlooked artists (Jazmine Sullivan, Corrine Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse, Chrisette Michele, Estelle, Franz Ferdinand, Sara Bareilles, etc…) so I tend to pay attention when I see their “You Oughta Know” logo pop on the screen.

So while flipping through channels this morning I landed upon Little Jackie, a duo consisting of vocalist Imani Coppola and DJ/Programmer Adam Palin.  The song “The World Should Revovle Around Me,” has that summer/block party feel that lets either zone to the instrumental or actually pay attention to the lyrics.

They may or may not be the next big thing, but they made me bob my head on a rainy Tuesday morning and that a good enough start for me.

Feels good to be home! Back doing what I do best on a Monday: Putting together another Hard Body Female Spit compilation for the hip-hop nation. Yup, ego trip’s Miss Rap Supreme Show on VH1 was off last week so there was no YN guest blog spot—anywhere (look it up!). But after 14 long days I’m back like I forgot my Kangol. And who better to return to burn with than my dude Gotty™ and The Smoking Section squad.

That’s right the mighty TSS and YN. A Wilson Media LLC/Rawkus collaboration? Shit, we ain’t done broke bread since ego trip’s Big Playback album. Wow. You see what goes around comes back around again. Someone kiss Blak Shawn on the forehead for me. Pause!

“…YN’s got some shit to hawk.”

You knew it was only a matter of time before Elliott Wilson, aka YN, came back on the scene because, as my OG told me, “you can’t stop a stepper.” As the self-proclaimed “former heavyweight champ of hip-hop journalism,” I’ve always admired the unabashed arrogance of the cat along with the fact that, hate it or love it, his proclamations are often based on some semblance of truth.

Currently, he’s helping to helpin’ to parlay ego trip’s Miss Rap Supreme reality series. Seeing as how 1.) The “(White) Rapper Show” had a tremendous following and 2.) VH1 is the only Black/urban/hip-hop channel (yeah, I said it) doing anything substantial right now, all in all it should be a decent show. I mean shit, they got Khia (read her blog entries to see why this chick is pure fuckin comedy & full of quotables), a Russian lady, a German chick who raps in pronounced English, a midget, an amped up version of Da Brat, a mysterious bird with swooped & gelled bangs to cover her injured eye…just peep the trailer to understand.
