Much like any thing else part of sneaker culture, knowing the history of the products creates a better appreciation of them in the present tense. While I’ve only owned one pair of Vans Half Cab’s (a pick up on tour that was bright orange and a size too big), I do love Vans as a brand. Generally, I give their products a pass for being authentic, very consumer-friendly when it comes to price and their ability to meet buyers’ needs.

The latter could not be any more evident in this most recent special release that explains the history of the Half Cab by presenting it in its original form. As the story goes skaters took to their Caballero model and tweaked it by literally cutting the anchor in half and duct taping it. The company responded by manufacturing the altered model and offering it as the Half Cab. It just goes to show that corporate greed doesn’t drive every decision; sometimes its just about ensuring the consumer gets the product that they want.

Only 20 pairs of the ‘duct taped’ kicks are set to release along with three other colorways inspired by iconic Thrasher Magazine covers.

Donwill may be better known as a member of Tanya Morgan and solo artist but he also harbors a pretty healthy addiction to sneakers. When he’s not creating soulful Hip-Hop songs he can be found writing about soles full of visible Air over at Kicks On Fire.

I always admired shoes for their artistic merit and growing up I always thought it’d be cool to display some of my favorites in glass boxes around the house when I was older. Looking back that seems pretty stupid, although I’m aware it is done. When Hip-Hop fans think of hot weather, anthems like “Dear Summer” or “Summertime” end up on most people’s list. The Summer has a bond with fresh gear and the lyrics can back up that argument. But why is that? The artist formerly known as the “Fresh Prince” knew the deal: scantily clad summer bunnies motivate dudes to look sharp. So for the Summer edition, I brought in founder of online lifestyle magazine CtotheJL, Chris Lee, to give his suggestions.

Just a bit of advice before we move forward – Do not, I repeat, DO NOT wear shorts that rest above the knee. Yes, guys wear more fitting clothes lately but this does not apply to shorts. You don’t want to look like Magic Johnson in ’79 bro – not a good look.
