Another loose track from Dam-Funk’s series of free downloads, most of which are unmastered and all previously unreleased. Very smooth and almost pensive, “Don’t Give Up!” rides a totally different lane than many of other tracks Dam’s shared but it’s still laced with sprinkles from Dam’s smorgasbord of sounds. The backstory has been told countless times of how Atlantic gave the track to Lupe, he screwed the pooch and admitted that he considered committing that after he saw how big the tune became. The fable continues to grow but since it doesn’t sound like Lupester went for the gusto on Jonsin’s beat, maybe B.o.B getting the song was the best thing for all parties involved. Hot on the heels of the well-received 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s mixtape, this week’s Camp Lo offering is an unreleased track taken from their stint on SRC Records. Read the rest of this entry »
I remember this dropping recently as a snippet, tagged version and then a crappy full. Patience pays off and we finally get a quality version. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s almost crazy to believe six years have passed since Cam’ron took those bullets in Washington D.C. for not handing over his Lamborghini. That started a chain of events which included driving himself to the hospital and later blaming Jay-Z for the attempted hit on the hilarious diss record “You Gotta Love It” Read the rest of this entry »
The original version of “Top Down” found Swizzy rapping solo over this beauty of a beat and was featured on Liberty City’s 102.7 The Beat. To fill in those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, the radio station was one of two Hip-Hop stations in the maniacal world of GTA IV. Read the rest of this entry »
Stones Throw Records has unearthed a Friday gem, providing an unreleased J Dilla and Madlib track, “Louder,” set to appear on Madlib’s upcoming LP, Low Budget High Fi Music. “Louder” rumbles along with the same fierce stomp the late Detroit luminary imbued in many of his tracks, as scratches and samples accent the muscular beat. The sparse production elements might leave a few questioning the sound quality, but it’s signature Jaylib every time those drum kit’s kick. Read the rest of this entry »
Before Str8 Killa, Freddie Gibbs released three key previous mixtapes – midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and The Labels Tryin’ To Kill Me!. The trio was crafted from a combination of tracks left from Fred’s scrapped Interscope release, alongside freestyles and other new material created for the tapes and, between them, we heard most of what would have been a magnificent major label debut. For closure, we now have “It’s All Cognac,” a track recorded in March 2006 and originally slated to close out the album. Read the rest of this entry »
Homeboy Sandman fills every space in a bar, like he has way too much to say to fit into the predefined structure of the song. His flow rushes over its self, never allowing the listener a rest. If you blink for a second or get lost in the man’s remarkable rhyme structure, you’ll miss a gem of knowledge or a quick, sly punchline. Over a rollicking horn sample in “72 Bars For Chosenberg,” the Queens representative once again demonstrates that he should not be slept on. Read the rest of this entry »

A smooth, new old Nas track, which surfaced over the weekend, titled “Who Are You.” Couple that with talks of Lost Tapes 2 seeing the light of day and this qualifies as a bundle of joy. Read the rest of this entry »
Just wait until Fest’s alderman’s race opponent Willie Cochran gets hold of this. When Che revealed his political ambitions, many of us assumed he would be absentee from the mic and, for all intents and purposes, he has been. But every artist has a plethora of unreleased material sitting in a closet or on a hard drive waiting to be uncovered. Read the rest of this entry »
For those of you who didn’t get exactly what you wanted for Christmas, it’s not too late. The Scrooge McDuck turned Santa of Hip-Hop, Dr. Dre, has opened the vault and let loose another more highly coveted record for your listening pleasure. The unearthed song, “Syllables,” sounds a bit dated, hosting appearances from now ex-Aftermath soldier Stat Quo in addition to a quick verse from long-forgotten Ca$his, who’s surprisingly still signed to Interscope for purposes unknown. But the heavyweight headliners – 50, Hov, Dre, and Em – are the obvious main attractions. Read the rest of this entry »
