The Talib Kweli Mini-Mix

04.23.11 Written by Gotty™

Before any upcoming show, I usually immerse myself in the slated performer’s catalog. Right now, Talib’s the flavor of the month since the Gutter Rainbows tour comes to the ‘Ville on Cinco de Mayo. However instead of doing my usual iPod playlist, I asked Trackstar, our unofficial official in-house DJ, to create a souped up “mini-mix,” an ADD-influenced creation which didn’t stagnant on songs and intended to cover the max within a 30 minute span. Rockwell Knuckles – You’re F*ckin Out, I’m F*ckin In

03.28.11 Written by Trackstar The DJ

Jay Electronica. Dr Dre. Rockwell Knuckles.

Some artists do things on their own schedule, happy to let anticipation build up before releasing new material when it’s just right, and not a moment before. It’s been over a year since Choose Your Own Adventure, but You’re F*ckin Out, I’m F*ckin In is worth the wait. Read the rest of this entry »

Camp Lo & Pete Rock – “80 Blocks Intro”

03.22.11 Written by Trackstar The DJ

I’ve always felt Camp Lo hasn’t gotten the acclaim they deserved–everyone recognizes Luchini as a classic but the whole Uptown Saturday Night album is an underrated gem, and their subsequent albums were very solid despite being practically ignored by the rap crowd at large. As such, it’s a great honor to be helping try to push them back towards the spotlight by mixing and presenting the 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s mixtape, Read the rest of this entry »

Camp-Lo & Pete Rock – “Mic Check”

03.17.11 Written by Patrick M.

Trackstar passed us this one in the middle of his pre-SXSW mania. “Mic Check,” the first leak off the anticipated 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s collaboration features a boom bap-ish beat from Pete Rock that fulfills expectations. Camp-Lo’s rhymes on this joint are particularly loquacious and the chemistry between the particulars seems natural. Read the rest of this entry »

Trackstar The DJ – Boogie Bang 25 (Hosted By David D.)

01.04.11 Written by David D.

So, this happened. I’ll let Trackstar tell it first:

I started Boogie Bang as a way to showcase the talent I was seeing in St Louis, mixing local MCs with established artists. I borrowed the name from a Tef Poe song off Tech Supreme’s Beneath the Surface project, and didn’t necessarily anticipate doing a second volume at the time, let alone 25. Almost five years later, over a quarter of my catalog is a Boogie Bang. Read the rest of this entry »

Trackstar The DJ Presents Pressure

11.24.10 Written by Gotty™

To balance out scales leaning toward the bubblegum & ringtone rap, Trackstar took the time to gather friends with music that has a purpose and thus our ears are treated to Pressure, a themed mix presented in support of the unsung voice of police brutality victims nationwide. Simply put, the DJ uses the tunes to raise awareness and inspire listeners to think about what’s going on in the world, where we are potentially headed and take action. Read the rest of this entry »

Bambu – “Peace Is Not” x Skipp Coon & Mr Nick – “Die Fightin’”

Because my version of Hip-Hop still packs a pistol for revolutionary purposes, we’re proud to highlight two tremendous tracks by Bambu and Skipp Coon & Mr. Nick. Both songs will be featured on Trackstar’s upcoming mixtape, Pressure, where music and Molotovs will come together in the name of civil disobedience done to a beat. Read the rest of this entry »

Wafeek – Monster: The Mixtape

10.28.10 Written by Gotty™

At a certain point, there’s a need to cut the previews and cue the main attraction. Wafeek has a proven track record for crafting projects that are creative and connected in theme, ones that tell the story well enough on their own and making our job a hell of a lot easier.
