It’s been a little over a decade since Mos and Kweli released their collaborative masterpiece. When Blackstar entered the atmosphere, I was a 10 year old pint-sized Hip-Hop head listening to whatever cassettes my older sister would jam in her Ford Escort. I can’t say I remember much from that year partially due to my age as well as the amount of brain cells I’ve killed from 9th grade to the present, but I certainly felt the impact these two had on the game once I revisited the record some years later as an older head.

Fortunately for us, history is said to repeat itself. And if that’s the triple truth Ruth then maybe we can expect to see a new Blackstar album on the horizon (fingers crossed). In the meantime, the Blackstar aligns for a couple minutes as Mighty Mos drops the visual for “History” – shot by frequent Mos collaborators Coodie & Chike – off of his Grammy-nominated The Ecstatic. While watching, we’re all reminded why these two work so good together as they take rookie emcees to class over a donut provided by the late J Dilla.

Sorry, people. But The Ecstatic didn’t do it for me. I haven’t found that much replay value in it. However, one track has managed to stay on my playlist: “Roses.” The sole reason lies in the sultry voice of one Georgia Anne Muldrow. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s been another long week around here and things started out in a BIG way.  By big, we mean Tahiry big, as the photos leaked for her TahiryTV website.  People across the net simaltaneously rejoiced and began the countdown ’til she kicks Joe to the curb.  Not be outdone, T-Pain unveiled his Big Ass Chain, literally.  Jay performed DOA at Summer Jam, as he looked to end another “era” in Hip-Hop.  Trackstar continued his RMF Radio movement, while Contra™ played watchdog at The National Spelling Bee. You can’t question the fact that Mos Def is one of the most talented emcees in the game. You can, however, question his commitment to Hip-Hop over the last five years. The lucrative opportunities offered to Mos on big and small screen have been too much for him to pass up. But you can’t take without giving something up, and what has suffered has been Mos’ musical career. 2006’s True Magic was panned for its lack of cohesion and consistency, the work of a man with too much on his plate.

The same criticisms can be raised on The Ecstatic, an, uneven unpolished offering from the aspiring Renaissance man. Employing his experiences from sojourning various poverty-stricken nations gives the music a contemporary influence, yet the biggest problem with The Ecstatic is its disjointed nature—there’s no consistent flow from song to song or overarching theme within the project. In continuing with his energized and welcome return to the realm of rapping music, Mos Def’s been hitting the television circuit as he performed “Quiet Dog” on The David Letterman Show and  “Casa Bey” from his upcoming The Ecstatic on Tuesday night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, backed by The Roots.

Not surprisingly, the live band transition made for a slick expanded instrumental with the added bonus of Black Thought’s underrated accentual singing.

Mos rocked the delivery too, impressively ad-libbing while singing and hitting every flow transition with impeccable timing. Hit the break for the footage. Read the rest of this entry »
