It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of The Beatles. I have a company named after one of the member’s songs and own practically all their albums on vinyl. There’s also a pretty good chance that I’m a Wu-Tang fan considering Hip-Hop was my first love and the fact that I’m still breathing. Both groups changed the face of their musical genre upon entering the spotlight. The Beatles being one of the first studio bands to do all original music on their albums and The Wu coming out with nine dope MC’s on one roster.
Considering these factors, my feelings were mixed when I came across Tea Sea Record’s Wu-Tang Vs. Beatles mash-up album a couple of weeks ago. On one hand, I couldn’t wait to check it out, but on the other I feared how corny and forced it may turn out. Reluctantly, during one of my eight hour shifts at work, I finally pressed play on my iPod. To my surprise, the next 37 songs went by so smooth it felt like it was an original production.
One thing that Tom Caruana did that made it such an enjoyable listen is not pander to either audience. While the Beatle’s influence was apparent, it wasn’t in your face to the point where it distracted from the razor sharp lyrics from Shaolin’s finest, and the Wu verses he utilized were not just the ones everybody and their grandmother knows. In all honesty, I enjoyed this album much more than Danger Mouse’s mash-up effort The Grey Album. That’s saying something.
So if you were skeptical at first like I was and are looking for a reason to download, allow me to be your recommender. It’s very well done and worth the disk space.
