On Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV And Faux Libraries

04.19.11 Written by TC

2011 has already been a trying year for Hip-Hop, with controversy piled over top outrage surmounted by confusion, only to all overshadow the handful yet memorable pieces of music we laid claim to. Goodbye to the days where the musician created a celebrity. Hello to the fully visualized dawn where the more outrageous, bizarre or inconspicuously wack you are the better your chances are to skip a few steps and find yourself in a graduating class typically reserved for the talented. Lil Wayne – “Show ‘Em What You Got”

04.12.11 Written by Beware

The other day, “Lollipop” came on for the first time in about a year, so I set aside my biases and enjoyed the sucker single for what it was worth. With more mass appeal than the entire Gangstarr fanbase, Lil Wayne’s first number one had many a footnote. Aside from being Weezy’s original foray into Auto-Tune, the club-killer was set-off by Jim Jonson’s hypnotizing, breakthrough beat and Static Major’s now-5x-platinum vocal legacy. All of which, of course, further solidified the Young Money millionaire as a new kind of rockstar for the next generation.

Now, two years later – after dropping two sort-of albums, becoming a successful CEO and an in & out bid in Rikers, the Louisianimal is gearing up for his uber-anticipated Carter IV and has been looking to drop another Kemba Walker-style-crossover joint. Complex says “Show ‘Em What You Got” may be just that. While not nearly as initially engaging as it’s plastic-wrapper predecessor, this women empowerment jam is bubbly enough to set off of the salons this summer and make sure Wayne keeps the paying fanbase happy.

And, even in a year from now, we guys will still stick to the mixtape Weezy.

Lil Wayne Feat. Rick Ross – “If I Die Today”

03.23.11 Written by Gotty™

“If I die today, it’d be a holiday.”

Luckily, I love Ricky’s “I’m Not A Star” because Wayne basically strong-armed Ross for it and revamped the tune, calling it “If I Die Today.” Read the rest of this entry »

Lil Wayne Feat. Cory Gunz – “6 Foot, 7 Foot” Video

03.03.11 Written by Raj

“6 Foot 7 Foot” itself is a classic re-emergence for Weezy. Minimize the hook, maximize the verses, and utterly exploit the wordplay. Sounds like a winning formula to me. Then it’s only the next natural step for Hype Williams to sit in the director’s chair, and put together an interesting Inception-themed video filled with your random assortment of hoes, hundred dollar bills and a lot of smoke. Lil Wayne Feat. Cory Gunz – “6’7″”

12.14.10 Written by David D.

Finally. A few Weezy fans are probably uttering that word right now, but I’m saying it because after years and years…and years of saying Cory Gunz is on his way, the NY fire spitter finally has a co-starring role in a monster track. Read the rest of this entry »
