I don’t know what sparked Suga Free’s sudden reappearance onto the scene, but I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t highly pleased to hear his ridiculously misogynistic style over the drums of a new era. It’s not like I share the views he expresses in his verses, but by the time the 16th bar is spit my head is nodding and my smile can’t be hidden. DJ Quik x Suga Free – “Nobody”

If you’re a fan of either one of these artists, it should warm your soul a little to see the title of this post.

Any DJ Quik diehard will tell you their favorite permed-out producer/rapper is better with his one-time protege Suga Free than without, and vice versa. It’s in the handbook you get once you’ve purchased Balance & Options more than five times. From Rhythmalism to Street Gospel, Balance & Options to The New Testament, these two interwove their previous pimpology to create a chemistry and flyness one in their own, churning out classic material together for close to a decade. Then came the un/expected tipping point, where personal problems split the two down the middle and sent them on their own, separate and unequal endeavors. Free coasted on his associations for a while, remaining independent, while putting a few hot records along the way. Quik, on the other hand, released maybe two of his most mainstream records to date and gained little to no ground as a result. Last a more than casual listener had heard, shots were even fired.
