Steve Jobs’ contribution to the world of computers and technology has always been very well documented. His prevalent fingerprints are all over today’s laptops, phones and the entire electronic world. Steve Jobs announced today that he is stepping down as CEO of Apple, Inc. opting for a new position as Chairman of the Board. There are a variety of speculations as to why the decision was made, with the primary theory being that his recent health problems probably were becoming too much to bear on top of the responsibility of running the corporation. So, Steve Jobs sold 120,000 iPads on Friday.
If I remember correctly, his iPhone/iBook merger ticketed for around $600. And if my phone’s calculator calculations add up, that means Apple earned $72 million dollars of revenue in one day off one product. A product that doesn’t even hit stores until April 3rd, mind you. Seven years ago, iTunes made buying MP3′s cool. Much like many of things Apple does, they weren’t the first to do it, but they made it easier & accessible. What once seemed strange, has become common place and is here to stay. So much that they’re coming up on their 10 billionth download and are in the mood to celebrate.

It seems as if everyone is trying to change the music business these days. Tom from MySpace tried and failed miserably. Jigga’s foray into innovation with LiveNation is still dependent on whether he can make it work with another, less-Hovtastic artist. Radiohead’s pay-whatever-you-think-it’s-worth-gimmick eventually worked. Shit, Steve Jobs is the only one that actually unquestionably succeeded. Read the rest of this entry »
One of the biggest headlines today has nothing to do with a natural disaster or President Obama’s upcoming state of the union address. Nope, a large majority of the world focused its attention on Steve Jobs and Apple as they unveiled their iPad. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m no techie but the past 24-48 hours have been full of news from Apple. First, Steve Jobs comes clean regarding his illness & his decision to step down for a few months. Today @ the Macworld conference, word has leaked that Apple, in partnership with music labels, will make it’s music catalog DRM-free.
Citing two unnamed sources, CNET is reporting that Apple agreed to a three-tier variable pricing model in return for the ability to sell music without its limiting FairPlay technology, which restricts the use of iTunes-purchased music to Apple-created devices. According to the report, there will be different prices for older catalog titles, modern but less popular songs, and current hits. The announcement could come during the MacWorld keynote.
