I’m not sure when Hip-Hop became an adjective (Can someone consult the OED for me?). But I am sure that if Gotty, KRS-ONe, Scarface, Snoop (the rapper) and Snoop (aka Felicia Pearson) were brainstorming a list of the least “Hip-Hop,” things in this world, tennis, Roger Federer and Wimbledon would be battling for the top of the list.

Some evidence: Federer’s from Switzerland, whose last contribution to popular music was either the Ricola commercials or The Sound Of Music soundtrack. Wimbledon’s so pretentious they call their tournament “The Championships,” just to remind everyone they don’t particularly care if the rest of the world exists. The food of choice is strawberries and cream. If the monarchy of England decides to attend, they sit in “The Royal Box,” as a reminder to the good old days of The Empire. All the players are required to wear all-white outfits, as if the presence of color or diversity would arise some sort of insecurity in the pale-faced Prisoners of Mother England.

But at TSS, we cover aim to covery history as well as Hip-Hop. And Roger Federer just made history, winning Wimbledon for the 6th time and, more importantly, the 15th Grand Slam tournament of his career to become unquestionably the greatest tennis player of all time.

En route to my first cookout today, I was asleep in the passenger seat when Juan called. “They just found Steve McNair dead in downtown.” This was approximately twenty minutes after the news broke. Immediately after, I’ve received numerous emails & calls about his death & the circumstances. Honestly, the word I keep using to describe me reaction to it is “salty.”

When the Titans came to Nashville & with their subsequent success, Steve McNair gave the city an alternate face to display. It was a face different from the usual Country music icons that everyone not from here knew the city and that was a blessing. It was, of course, a Black face so that made it even sweeter. Regardless of color, the majority of middle Tennessee embraced him. Stuck with him, even during the Titans struggles & his D.U.I. arrest.

The cruel thing about soccer is that in an instant, 180 minutes of hard-won domination can be rendered useless. Case in point, yesterday’s Champions League semi-final match between Chelsea and Barcelona.

Over the course of two matches, Chelsea managed to shackle — statistically-speaking — the greatest Barcelona team ever, better than the likes of the early ‘90s “Dream Team” and the ’06 squad featuring Ronaldinho at his superhuman peak. Barcelona was running scared shitless, mistiming every pass in anticipation of hard tackles flying in, especially from one man — marauding midfielder Michael Essien.
