“Undisputed”- Review Of Ludacris’ Theater Of The Mind

12.01.08 Written by TSSCrew

That boy Christopher Bridges has done quite well for himself since he came back for the first time 8 years ago. Now, with 3 Grammys, 6 albums and 15 million records sold, as well as 12 movies, and numerous businesses under his belt, Mr. Bridges, commonly known as Ludacris, is a different man with different goals and a new challenge to make a different album.

At this stage in his career, he no longer has the luxury of sticking to a formula, and regurgitation, but cannot run the risk of straying to far from his diehard base and newfound audience lest he find his creative initiative scrutinized like Kanye others did….just less successful. So it is that Christopher chose to try something new to him, but not foreign to us, putting a somewhat fresh spin on the age-old, career saving, ‘concept album’ concept. “The Bucket List”

Pic Property of ABC

Geriatric fights are commonly funny. Seeing two 70+ year old guys fight over Bingo was the main reason I’d go with Great-Grandma. One time, both of the guys had heart attacks and were still swinging at the other as they clinched their own chests. But it wasn’t funny after that. Uhn uh.

I bring up this scene because two veterans in the movie “industry” have started a “beef”, if you will, and are throwing “controversial” verbal “jabs” at each other. I added the quotes for theoretical satire. For those of you that haven’t heard, Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood have been exchanging over-the-air disses towards each other. This is all after Spike’s direction of the war film, Miracle At St. Anna, about the unrecognized Black soldiers in WWII, specifically the Sant’Anna massacre. Mr. Lee emphasized his contempt of Hollywood’s lacking to show Blacks’ efforts in WWII. He took umbrage specifically with Eastwood’s lack of color in his 2006 films, Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. I must admit, I didn’t see one brother is Saving Private Ryan or Flags Of Our Fathers and the last brother I saw in a war flick was in either Dead Presidents or Forrest Gump.

Eastwood goes on to say the whole movie had no African-Americans because they didn’t help raise the flag, tells Lee to learn his history, and, most notably, to “shut his face.” That’s good. I was worried he would’ve said, “Do you feel lucky?” Then Lee, being the radical he is, tells Eastwood, “you’re not my father,” “We’re not on a Plantation” and that [Clint] “sounds like an angry old man.” Read the rest of this entry »

“Is It The Vicious Dunks?”

06.01.08 Written by LC Weber

No, Mars.

According to Variety, Spike Lee is set to direct a Mike documentary that I, for one, might not be watching.

I know Spike is going to do the movie justice, but I fear how I’ll feel about the Man, the Myth, the Legend when I walk away. I already get a little disheartened to see the superhero looking old and out of shape, so what will he be reduced to when we see all the grit between the wrinkles? I’m not sure ‘70s and ‘80s babies need to see him looking regular. Magic Johnson looks reeeeeeal normal these days; has he not lost a bit of that short-shorts-era sheen?

While I’ve seen some limited ESPN clips of his life, I appreciate that I never personally seen Barry Sanders –- ever. Although I’d like him to answer my eternal question of “What the fuck?” it only makes him more of an enigma wrapped within a mystery that he doesn’t come around. I can make up endless stories about how Barry lives his day-to-day (which I envision is something to the effect of he wakes up cradling a football, then spends the rest of his time toying with the idea of coming back for one last hoo-rah with the Lions, wherein he’d win his ring and simultaneously save the city of Detroit from financial and political destitution.)

All that poster-dunk Michael-ness might be washed away if we get to see too much of him now. There’s going to have to be an arch to the story and it can’t all be pretty. Spike is going to have to take it there. He’s going to have to go beyond Hanes, Bugs Bunny and divorce. I’m sure it get’s uglier… I’m just not sure I want to know.
