Who else foresees Soulja Boy becoming a legitimate MC over the course of the next few years?
Even though this specific promotional prelude to the snot-nose’s self-titled third album, Dre, leaves me feeling dumber, I surely can’t be the only one who sees a young entrepreneur with enough drive and vision to realize his room for advancement and the benefits of bridging the gap. Yeah, now that jury has decidedly reached a verdict, the judge will proceed over this whole ordeal and deem that this shit just flat out sucks. I don’t care how about any hood pass or how good it sounds in a trunk with two 12′s. Punchy, deliberated flows that even most novice of rappers could pull off. Gucci, Tell ‘Em and Waka Flocka couldn’t hit a bingo with one of those jumbo markers your granny keeps in her left apron pocket. Three UN-notable quotables are in order. Read the rest of this entry »
With the abundance of fresh, crisp and finely tailored gems displayed on Malice N Wonderland, “Pronto” stuck out like Snoop in an ESPN commercial–oh wait. I’m doing interviews and ‘dressin’ all these critics/tryna underrate me/sayin’ I ain’t got no lyrics…
No need to take our word for it. The people do have ears Mr. Tell ‘Em. This is track #14 on your freshly minted brick, so attempts of disassociating it from the album are only futile at this point.
Unbeknownst to most of the public however, there was a video he posted from his YouTube channel where he took back his stance on being a role model with a series of curse words and goo-goo ga-ga’s. It lasted a whooping 20 minutes but the impact it made is everlasting.
Ringtone Rap is on it’s way out the door. Read the rest of this entry »
Soulja Boy just may be the only rapper to ever have the luxury of sitting atop the love and hate mountains at the same time. On one hand, Mr. Tell ‘Em is the sole creator of “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” the biggest selling digital download of all time– while on the other, he simultaneously holds rank as the ultimate scapegoat for the decline of musical innovation. Naturally, looking for lyrical fulfilment from a Soulja Boy record is like seeking wifey in a strip club, but even as a party rapper, SB still misses his mark continuously with moronic songs that dive pass the safe haven of “fun” into “slacker” territory.
Which is where his sophomore effort iSouljaBoyTellEm slumps beyond the typical juve-pseudo bullshit and into an aimless wad of irksome synthesizers, lowbrow lyricism, and fart jokes. The initial period of accepting him as rapper/hitmaker has passed. It’s time to actually make hits. And the harsh reality of the matter is, Soulja Boy isn’t doing anything that the average individual with a microphone from Radio Shack® and a bag of Skittles® can’t accomplish. Absurdity such as “Bird Walk” and “Turn My Swag On” sound like they were derived from impromptu studio sessions where goofing off was the theme. Read the rest of this entry »
