Here at TSS, Skewby is one up & comer we stand firmly behind. Thankfully, we finally have something new to imagine from the Memphis MC. More than a year after his More Or Less debut put this young visionary’s picturesque rhymes on display like a Christmas showcase at Macy’s on 5th Avenue, “Ups & Downs” is yet another personal revelation for listeners to sympathize with. Today, September 30, marks Skewby’s birthday. Instead of accepting gifts, he’s giving one out to fans with his self-directed video for “Eleven 58.” Read the rest of this entry »
Since the video for Actual Proof and 9th Wonder’s mellow-hype posse cut “Super Genius” hadn’t made the jump from tracklist to green-screen yet, Skewby took it upon himself to take the track off the back-burner and shot a visual for strictly his sixteen off the production-trio’s Talented Tenth compilation. What’s left for us to say when both K.R.I.T. and his DJ, Wally Sparks, call Saturday night’s show “one of the top 10 shows” they’ve ever done? Pretty much nothing, to be quite honest. Our work is done. Video footage will be coming soon, but check the pics from the day as a whole, beginning with the in-store at PhatKaps to the nightcap which included snapping shots with the last few attendees hanging around the venue. Amazing things happen when you consistently position yourself in the right place. Skewby’s a prime example of thoughts and dreams being achieved and it’s something we’ve known since our first listen. That’s why this partnership between the three-stripe empire and our favorite Memphis youngblood have us smug. Read the rest of this entry »
Watching and listening to Skewby grow on wax gets better as the tracks accumulate. With each outing, he gets sharper as a writer, able to say translate thoughts to paper and communicate them clearly. Read the rest of this entry »
We’re a little late on posting Skewby’s new music video for “Sunny” – the MC’s well-timed, viral Valentine’s Day present to fans – but considering the theme, I think he’ll forgive us. Centered around the Hallmark holiday every good guy loathes, the clever concept behind this slick visual from Skewb’s highly-slept-on More Or Less LP shows the Memphis tiger going above and beyond for a lady friend, only to be let down when their schedules can’t coexist. “…But not one you can relate to.”
Certain songs you can count on from jump-street. The tempo isn’t timid. The vibe is right. Replay value is inevitable. However, typically those same songs are meant to be catchy, written by the artists strictly for the listeners’ approval and to further their own notoriety. Which – in it’s own right – is completely commendable. Read the rest of this entry »
The good and bad. Sweet and sour. This or that. Polar opposites come along every facet of life’s little adventures and sometimes that balance makes it all worth living; keeps you on toes. Skewby’s grizz-n-grind keeps him focused through an unexpected curveball or three and it’s those principles that he used to sculpt his latest LP, More Or Less. Serene in his approach with healthy doses of vigorous lyricism, if you’re not up on one of the South’s best kept secrets, this project is awaiting you with inviting ears. This is one of the few instances where I’m actually alright with not using a download link.
See, since Skewby made his first appearance on TSS a little over a year ago, we’ve seen him continually rise to the task of keeping us interested. Through an independent grind, captivating delivery and wholehearted lyricism, this Memphis representer has earned our time and attention. Read the rest of this entry »
Considering how intelligent they claim to be, Actual Proof should have known the elongated guest-list on their “Super Genius” remix would be a double-edged sword. The inflated title track to their upcoming release, Genius: The Talented 10th, this 9th-Wonder-produced middle-of-the-pack mega-mix shines with its array of punchlines from the next generation of young, starving artists. As Tastemakers, we stand firmly behind our filter here at TSS, screening and negating as many songs as we put on. For the past year or so, one artist we’ve stood firmly behind is Skewby. The man’s music speaks for itself, but the reason why can be described no better than the way it was put by the Memphis MC’s manager, Antonio, in a recent inbox message. Read the rest of this entry »
The first time we ever shared Skewby’s music, I was concerned. Not because there was any doubt in my mind the apparent excellence was post-worthy, but because homeboy was so talented, I just assumed we were beyond late. To my surprise, the Tennessee MC’s Proving You Wrong Since 1988 mixtape had received little to no burn on the hip-hop blogosphere and ended up living up to its title. In the year or so since, this all-around talent has released simmering songs and multiple music videos to showcase his Ginsu-sharp skill set, building skyscraper-like anticipation for his fall debut, More Or Less. “Broken levees, friends lost, but I lost more friends when The Source gave props.”
Lonely nights on the highway. Depressed days in the dark. Never-ending spells of mental numbing. These are times I’d choose to subdue myself to Skewby’s “Me Against The World.” Read the rest of this entry »
