Jeezy’s one of the most charismatic voices in the rap game and 2008′s The Recession damn near caused a civil war when we were rating it. However, everything between that release and now has been lackluster, sounding dull and hollow. It isn’t that his voice or delivery have changed much since Jeezy’s early music. It just lacks the cockiness and conviction that Young embodied as he stepped from the trap to the booth.
Still, I expect TM103 to shine. Jeezy reportedly tucked himself away in producer Shawty Redd’s basement, who was then fresh off murder charges, to record the album. These two obviously have a working chemistry and there’s undeniable appeal to albums that adopt the one rapper, one producer archetype. Let’s just hope they’re both able to muster enough creativity and cohesion to make this sequel one to remember.

The actual mixtape isn’t what it used to be but every now and then a good one comes along. This one dropped last week and I can’t front to say I’ve listened to the whole thing yet. But seeing all these fairly recent Southern tracks compiled on tape saved me a bit of time. Plus, I know KDough don’t touch no junk and it’s hosted by the man of the hour, K.R.I.T.
