Scarface – “Dopeman Music” Video

06.14.10 Written by Gotty™

With a solidified position in the game, I often wonder what Face’s purpose is for continuing to make music. Part of me hoped he slowly ease out of the way after the weak showing that was Emeritus. He didn’t; he released Dopeman Music on iTunes. As a lifer, I’m glad he did because it’s a redeeming effort to a degree. The first six to seven tracks trump Emeritus, all Chevy-ready tracks that sound akin to Face from The Untouchable era. Read the rest of this entry »

Young Jeezy x Don Cannon – Trap Or Die Pt. 2 (By Any Means Necessary)

05.04.10 Written by TC

Been on his grizzy but now he’s back in the place. If you don’t have his money, he’ll put his tech in your face. For no reason would it have appeared Jeezy has gone soft (pause) and he’s driving that point home by revisiting what helped him conquer the streets the first time around with Trap Or Die 2. Although a far cry from the Super Bowl Weekend release date it was originally slated to be drop on, the time is now and your CD decks couldn’t be happier. Read the rest of this entry »

Scarface Is Giving Away Free Dope

04.28.10 Written by Gotty™

Scarface is cookin’ up and breakin’ off a taste of the product by offering a “megamix single” of his upcoming Dopeman Music street album. All in all, I think that’s a slightly souped way of saying “we neatly packaged the album snippets and put them on Amazon for you to stream/download.” Read the rest of this entry »

Scarface Feat. B. James & Monk Kaza – “Dopeman Music”

04.25.10 Written by TC

Yeah, nobody really believed Brad was really retiring. And while we still struggle to pronounce the name of that last album, he’s doing his best Kingdom Come rendition by serenading the streets with something that’s been missing amongst all the swag and skinny jeans (c)rap: good ‘ol fashioned d-boy muzik. The Week That Was: The Spring Has Sprung Edition

04.03.10 Written by MZ

The weather’s broken and it’s no more appreciated than here at TSS.  The boots have been put away and the sneakers are out. Wireless hotspots & internet cards begin to look like sound investments when the sun begins to shine through the windows. Through it all, the content continues to fly fast and furious. Take a look back at some of the highlights of the past week: Read the rest of this entry »

The Son Of Tony Montana

03.29.10 Written by TC

Imagine your eight-year-old handing you a permission slip asking you to sign it so they can be a part of the spectacle which is Scarface: The School Play. The only “coke” they’re aware of is a fountain drink and shall they ever visit a Cabana Club prematurely, you can kiss college goodbye. That tuition money will be spent/earned by the stripper pole. Mr. Scarface At The Go-Go

02.18.10 Written by Gotty™

More proof that older rappers don’t have to retire, rehash the same album or downgrade themselves by appearing on ringtone remixes with Souljah Boy. All they have to do is relocate to the D.C. area and link with any one of the prominent Go-Go bands in the area to provide a small jolt to the music they already have in their expansive catalogs.

Listen as Mr. Scarface brings his brand of funk to the DMV to gets adequate support from the Backyard Band. As BYB provides the backbeat, Uncle Brad sounds 100% at home holding court rapping and talking, adapting his music to the give and take, jam session vibe of go-go and he even picks up a guitar at one point to join into the jam. The end result is a controlled groove that gives Face room to roam and gives new legs to songs that may have been forgotten by some.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Download — Backyard Band Feat. Scarface – “First Light Of The Day/Medley“

Respect to Noz for putting this and two other cuts (those with Rare Essence and Northeast Groovers) out there. If it catches you ear, he’s also got up two Busta tracks at the go-go.

“Somehow, Someway…”

11.02.09 Written by J. Tinsley

jay-beans

Ever since the Jay and Beans fiasco broke the other day, I’ve managed to keep my opinions to myself…at least on the blogging front. Reason being because I honestly found myself on the fence. To Jay’s credit, Beans did have a record label, a promising crew, a clothing line and his first album come within hair length of platinum status. The seeds of success were planted, they just never blossomed. To Beanie’s credit, stories of Jay’s financial infidelities have been discussed ad nauseum. We knew that. Cam put that on front street a long time ago. In the grand scheme of things, I’m sure both parties are just as much right as they are wrong. The realization that hurt the most though? Losing the last sliver of hope (as in .0001%) of seeing that coveted Jay/Beans/Scarface triplet compilation pierces my soul. Read the rest of this entry »

With only the second entry in this iPod Shuffle thing (did you see the first?), I don’t want to spoil you. I have no intentions of writing a piece to accompany every song that we post with this. Actually, the not writing aspect was the whole draw for me. Give you a dope song & K.I.M.

With this Brad Jordan joint, it’s different. Read the rest of this entry »

“Featuring Bun B…”

03.28.09 Written by Gotty™

Just about every post I create takes a circuitous route. Listening to Scarface’s Greatest Features led me to go back & check DJ Keyz’s Scarred For Life mixtape from a few years back and ended up back @ Get Screwed Up, the Keyz created mixtape of all Bun features & guest appearances.

While LC chose Meth, I’ve already said that Bro. Bernard would receive a portion of my Fantasy Rapper budget. For me, the decision is made abundantly clear once you listen to Bun run roughshod over Jeezy’s “Trap Or Die.” But if you should happen to be a nonbeliever or looking for further proof, this mix is for you. As a guest star, what Bun always manages to do is stay on topic while completely stealing the show.

Tracklisting & link after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

“Spacious Thoughts” – Review Of N.A.S.A.’s The Spirit Of Apollo

02.12.09 Written by TSSCrew

Unless you’re from the Left Coast or a card-carrying Hip-Hop nerd, you probably haven’t heard of the questionably named N.A.S.A, a collaborative effort between Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. But if most Hip-Hop fans don’t recognize these two, their musical peers clearly respect their talents. The guest list on their debut The Spirit of Apollo reads like a Hip-Hop Hall of Fame: Scarface, Kanye West, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, E-40, as well as rock legends David Byrne and Tom Waits.

All that talent at your disposal is nice, but it also places an onus on the unknown producers to create music worthy of their artists. In this, Clean and Zegon have succeeded, fusing electronica, old school Hip-Hop beats and Brazilian funk to create a consistently engaging and dynamic sonic canvas for their artists. Wire Tap: If Rappers Were Characters From The Wire

02.10.09 Written by TSSCrew

It’s been a year and I still miss The Wire and all its characters. We said our final goodbyes in 2008 but recent endless viewings of the DVD box set had me feeling sentimental and inspired. It’s the “Who would play me in a movie?” game further realized and repurposed, i.e. which rappers would play characters on The Wire? So, without further adieu…

Charles Hamilton as Duquan “Dukie” Weems — These two have more of an uncanny physical resemblance than Blu and Bubbles. Besides their connection as look-alikes and being coincidentally homeless at different points in life, both are bright, yet can’t seem to get the formula quite right to move on to a higher level of success. Coincidentally, and both lived in the streets.

Nas as Avon Barksdale — Okay, so maybe Nas isn’t really a hustler or a gangster. But he is an older figure who has seen more dominant days, finding his way in an environment that may/may not be suited to his tastes any longer. Oh, and he evolved as the opposite of…

Jay-Z as Stringer Bell — The intelligent hustler. Does/did anyone so knee deep in their respective field have a more savvy business sense than these two?

Andre 3000 as Lester Freamon — These wise vets are intensely cerebral while having a creative outlet that helps them make money while expressing themselves. Both have also expressed discontent or disinterest with the state of their environments. Read the rest of this entry »
