Ro Spit has come pretty damn far in a relatively short amount of time. Probably four years ago, when the Pontiac, MI native was still going by Octane and partnered with his homeboy iLLiTe, I only knew him as the Burn Rubber guy who was attempting to double as an MC. At the time, his bars were on par, but the music seemed like it was somewhat stuck in the shadow of his one-story Royal Oak sneaker boutique, as if the budding entrepreneur hadn’t quite figured out which facet he wanted to take to the next level. The music of Detroit has always been a barometer for the city’s well doing. The sounds of Motown & Doo Wop served as a sign of prosperity, with even brighter days to come as they permeated from radio speakers. As the fortunes of The Big Three crumbled, the city began to fall into a darker period and the music coming from the city and surrounding areas adjusted accordingly. Summer done dirty is a boozy bender at a bar with about as much luster and authenticity as cubic zirconium. Fat, over-processed versions of formerly precious co-eds take high-angled pictures that will one day make it to Facebook as testament to how young and fun they can still be and still are. Multi-layered tinks and clanks of beer bottles in bins and shot glasses in the air, and these 30-year-old bottle blondes squeal when they hear 2 Live Crew or Bon Jovi come on over the sticky dance floor.
