On Monday, Lupe Fiasco announced that he and Pharrell will be releasing an album together soon. Fantastic news for fans…but all it did was remind us of that now-forgotten Child Rebel Soldiers album that never manifested. Read the rest of this entry »
After what seems like two years of promotion, Thelonious Pain will finally release Revolver this Tuesday. So, for presumably the last big-name feature we’ll hear before it hits shelves, we’ve been given this theme song for fly ladies worldwide, by the past, present and future of R&B. The court of public opinion forever will hold strong convictions towards Robert Kelly’s alleged transgressions. Even if we can’t get past the pissy parts of his past, it’s also hard to ignore the Chicagoland singer’s catalog full of tunes we know and love. Read the rest of this entry »

Kelly’s got a bonafide smash record on her hands with “Motivation.” Well deserved, too, because it’s honestly a dope single. Like The-Dream, Robert Kelly obviously harbored the same respect as he decided to lay vocals over said sex anthem. Read the rest of this entry »
Tha D-O Double G had a successful run with his weekly weed smoker series and to keep his Doggumentary album in everybody’s mouth, he recruits the Westside’s go-to-pointman, DJ Skee to put the pieces together to make it LP. If Snoop’s involved, you know it’s an A-list affair. Presented by big money like Adidas Basketball and Colt 45 Blast, Snoop takes it back to the traditional approach of the mixtape when they weren’t so formal. Read the rest of this entry »

Going in with an open mind is the key to enjoying Robert Kelly’s music. Otherwise, there’s a very good chance you’ll flat out skip listening to this undeniably talented and unquestionably odd singer/songwriter altogether. Pesky past aside, his almost-A.D.D. approach at jumping sub-genres of R&B and public-relations-restricted promo campaigns always manage to leave me weary of whether or not my time is worthy of a listen. A month ago, Miss Info and I had a brief exchange regarding Lloyd’s “Lay It Down” and how the track had a youthful sound that reminded me of how music is meant to excite and create energy. My understanding came from being at local high school basketball game and watching a pack of seven, little raggamuffins pseudo-crooning their hearts out in the bleachers as the tune played during halftime. Robert Kelly, throughout the years, has been a man of many distinctions. On one hand, he is one of the most iconic song makers of all time. (ALL TIME FAM!) His music has defined generations and been the soundtrack to happy endings worldwide for years. Look around and for every teenager between the ages of 15 and 18, at least one out of every five is a product of “Bump N’ Grind.” Read the rest of this entry »
R. Kelly and Lil Jon share little in common, besides their ear for beats and the infamy of being eviscerated by Chappelle’s Show. Despite this and the many, many mockeries the duo have endured, they’re both undeniable hit makers and “Ms. Chocolate” is no exception. The beat brings the summertime heat and the denizens of South Beach club won’t mind if Lil Jon doesn’t have anything interesting to say as they dance their collective a$$es off. Kells and Mario carry the track anyways with their odes to the darker berries. Read the rest of this entry »
While much of mainstream R&B seems to be cyclical, R Kelly consistently manages to keep up. Give him a relevant beat people can dance to, a decent sixteen for a little crossover appeal and Kels can take it from there.
Such is the case with his new, nympho-friendly nightclub igniter and occasional excuse for underage relations, “She Knows What She’s Doin.” Despite a mediocre beat and uninspiring GLC verse, the Pied Piper pulls out all the stops with his melodic, half-rap double-time delivery, sounding a bit MJ-ish and turning an unmentionable song into a legitimate hit. Imagine if every time you were cruising your whip, getting down to a jam, the record label of said song sent you a subpoena saying you didn’t have the rights to sing-along. The word “appalled” comes to mind, or maybe even “dumbfounded.” Either way, that’s exactly what’s happening to Michael Jackson, or to his estate rather. Read the rest of this entry »
