Last night Black Star performed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon but I fell asleep. Thank goodness for the Internet otherwise I would’ve forever missed their performance of “Little Brother” and, more importantly, Questlove sharing the song’s intriguing backstory on the show’s site. The artwork for The Roots’ thirteenth studio album undun depicts a child completely inverted, mid-air, after springing up from a frayed, dirty and potentially dangerous, mattress. In that fleeting moment he’s flying. For a fraction of a second he rises above his surroundings. Read the rest of this entry »
Nike Basketball debuts “Spotlight,” the first commercial in their “Basketball Never Stops” campaign, highlighting pro and amateur athletes paying homage to the sport through continued participation. NBA stars LeBron James, Amar’e Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Durant are joined by the likes of Coach K., Sue Bird, J. Cole and ?uestlove, all playing and enjoying the game in its essence over the course of what was actually a great summer for on the court action. Read the rest of this entry »
Rain fell for four consecutive days in Nashville beginning last Sunday. Wind-blowing, sideways rain which ended up totaling well over four inches last I heard. Still, all of that rain did nothing to deter several hundred people from hitting up Mai to check ?uestlove play and celebrate LoveNoise’s eighth annual Labor Day soiree. Read the rest of this entry »

Make sure to be in attendance if ?uestlove comes to a discotheque within two area codes of yours. If your friends won’t go, leave them and go solo. Obviously, they weren’t good friends in the first place. Read the rest of this entry »
The promised footage from Questlove’s magical Monday night in Nashville a few weeks ago, hosted by Lovenoise, Coffee and the almighty TSS. Obviously there’s no way to gather and present all three-plus hours of his performance, at least not without packaging it, putting a price tag on it and selling copies in stores. ?uestlove came to Nashville to support our continued pursuit of epicness and massive it was. I originally considered running down 80 adjectives trying to paint how amazing the whole scene was and how relentless ?uest is on the mix…but simple words wouldn’t suffice in the least.
Video footage forthcoming but know and understand that Dee Goodz, Chance Warhol and DJ Wick-It held it down for the town. My camo cap goes off to Dee who stepped outside of comfort zone and usual crowd to make his mark. I never gauge how I feel about an artist’s performance solely on crowd reaction, knowing that sometimes an audience may hold back on giving props. Early call and responses fell short but young Goodz comes equipped with undeniable music and maximum charisma. And by his final track “Bananas,” the crowd rocked with him, filling in the calls for their participation.
