For a full-on push prior to dropping the full-length Fashionably Late, Donnis picked the cream of crop from this summer’s The Invitation mixtape as a way to remind us he’s still planning on bum rushing the Class of 2010 awards. For those that passed on “Maybe” the first time, Donnis delivers a breezy affair on some early aughts vibe with a sped up sample and worry free rhymes. Not bad theme music for roll cruising around with the windows down.

While it’s doubtful Donnis will dislodge Gibbs, Cole or Khalifia as 2010’s rookie of the year, at least he’s showing up to the competition. Better late than never.

With the influx of music that’s come across our paths over the past few weeks it’s been hard to keep my head above water. Pill’s latest 1140: The Overdose kinda got lost in the shuffle, actually there’s no kinda about it – after two or three listens it was on the next one. Unfilling to let this project be swept to the wayside, he hooked up with Motion Family to provide visuals for one of his tape’s standout tracks “On Da Korner.”

Eloquently chronicling the life of a foot soldier over Needlz’ pulsating synths & haunting vocal insert, Pill’s on top of his game with this one. I’ve been trying to remember the name of this track for the past few days (because looking in my Touch is so much work) to throw a few words on it, but the Motion Family did a much better job as they brought Pill’s already vivid tale to life. They take you so far in the trap you may very well have white fingertips when your done watching.

After scoring big with “Gone,” Donnis and producer Needlz hook up for yet another club banger with the infectious Rihanna-influenced “Yup.” Needlz provides a beat with enough bounce to make even the staunchest wallflower get on the dance floor, mixing in elements of “Hard” on the chorus as to assure a hit. Donnis doesn’t disappoint either as his pen game seems to have seriously stepped up since his last tape. Lyrically, he weaves through the rambunctious drums & synths with witty line after witty line proving that he’s got what it takes to be more than just another XXL freshman who drops out sophomore year. TSS: You’ve managed to get well-connected within the industry off the strength of your talent, but does it feel like you’re playing catch-up with the fans?

Donnis: Yeah, most definitely. I feel like people who are already poppin’ know I have a knack for what I do and it’s just time to let all the fans know I get it poppin’ as a lyricist. And that’s what we’re aiming to do with Diary Of An Atlanta Brave.

TSS: When did you first know you were capable of being a full-fledged MC?

Donnis: No bullshit, I think I’m just now coming into where I need to be lyrically — to be able to compete, ya know? I feel like I always had the capability. And my goal is to compete with the ones that are winning. Not just the ones who rap just to rap.
