The end of the month signals two things. One, rent’s due in a few days. Two, it’s time for another installment of Crew Love. For obvious reasons, we all enjoy this post as it gives us a chance to highlight songs that we can simply back and say we enjoy as fans. Read the rest of this entry »
Everybody’s from somewhere and rappers, more than artists in any other genre, always seem to be the first to big up their cities on wax. No matter the state, country or ward they were birthed, MCs can’t help but put on for their area code. Read the rest of this entry »
A friend couldn’t have summed up ESPN’s Winter X-Games better: “For three days every January, Sal Masakela gets a job and ESPN showcases 9 million degrees of spins.” Very true, but it also allows the network to try and awkwardly fit some randomly selected soundtrack to long-haired Europeans’ doing flips off a 30-foot snow pile. Nas held that position this year, but his appearance wasn’t as disastrous as it could’ve been. Read the rest of this entry »
Only a few months ago, Rick Ross’ career momentum was momentarily crippled by a series of seizures. The unofficial official word connected his ailments to exhaustion due to working too hard. Fast forward to early ’12, Ross must be well rested and recuperated because he’s back with a new drop, the Rich Forever mixtape Read the rest of this entry »

Following Illmatic, especially in retrospect, is the most impossible task in Hip-Hop history. Dubbed the greatest work of art the culture ever spawned, Nas’ sophomore effort, It Was Written, was thrown under the bus as a disappointment long after it graced shelves. But, it far from that, actually. Nasir carved time out of his schedule to speak with the folks at XXL to shed light on the project, which turned 15 years old this year. Read the rest of this entry »

When it comes to Nas, Hip-Hop heads have longed for two things: better beat selection and, logically following, a re-connect with the incomparable DJ Premier. Luckily, Hyundai (yes, really) helps bring our Hip-Hop wishes to reality through their RE-GENERATION project, “a documentary film that follows DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, The Crystal Method, Mark Ronson and Skrillex as they remix, recreate and re-imagine five traditional styles of music.” Read the rest of this entry »
Of course Mobb Deep’s mini golden run couldn’t last forever. It was just too good to be true. Three strong singles had me amped for their Black Cocaine EP and then they let the cat out the bag with the most anticipated record, “Get It Forever,” co-starring Nasir Jones. If you, like me, were expecting something like “Dog Shit” from earlier this year, I’d recommend not even pressing play. Read the rest of this entry »
“Like Smoke” started off as the barest shell of an Amy Winehouse joint – a smooth, throwback bit of soul from Salaam Remi, a few oohs and aahs from the late singer, and a hook. No more, no less. But then, luckily for us, Nasir Jones came by to do what he does best. Read the rest of this entry »

Two notable dates passed in Hip-Hop this week. Fans celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Jay-Z’s seminal Blueprint album. Meanwhile, Nasir and friends – including Jay – gathered to mark the QB MC’s 38th born day. Seeing our legends and their work age so gracefully is enjoyable…but remember when Hova & God’s Son weren’t on such great terms? Read the rest of this entry »
