Crooked I – Hip-Hop Weekly (1-52)

04.04.08 Written by Gotty™

To quote my man Contraâ„¢, Crook tombstoned #52 and sealed the casket shut on the series.

Consider this pitching the dirt into the grave. And I pray no one tries to unearth & relive it because I doubt they’ll be able to top Crook’s efforts over the past 52 weeks.

Crooked I – Hip-Hop Weekly (1-52) — Includes the DubCNN interview about the final Week 52 freestyle, his album, his future & his new single (coming soon).

Baseball is associated with many things but Hip-Hop? More commonly associated with sports such as basketball and football, Hip-Hop is now shining some light on America’s pastime. With a new generation of players being raised on Rap music, you can see its influence from the way they dress to their warm-up playlists on their iPod.

For years Hip-hop heads having been wearing jerseys and of course baseball caps, but you rarely see the reverse. Today you can see examples like Joba Chamberlain, relief pitcher for the New York Yankees. The Yankee franchise breeds clean-cut players a la Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, but for Chamberlain this is definitely not the case as he was seen last Monday leaving the rained out Yankee home opener rocking a hoody, fitted cap, baggy jeans and Air Force One sneakers. Can you tell me another cat in the Major leagues doing the same? Read the rest of this entry »

“Never Show Your Hand…”

Words By David D.

Picture this: Kobe invites you over to his house. While there, he shows you the mechanics of his jumpshot. Every aspect of his shot is explained. The set feet. The bended elbow. The amount of elevation.

What do you think happens after he shows you this? Are you suddenly understanding of Kobe’s secrets and capable of dropping 81 against an NBA team? Or do you have an even greater appreciation for the idiosyncrasies involved in making just one shot?

Madlib

Apparently Madlib, one of my favorite producers, has a problem with such disclosure. A couple of weeks ago, the good folks over at This Is HipHop posted all of the samples used in Madlib’s Madvillainy masterpiece. Almost as soon as the post went up, Lib requested that the link be shut down. I simply don’t understand the logic behind such a request. Read the rest of this entry »

Too Gangsta For Radio…

roc c

Sometimes the Westcoast is too G’d up.

Even though it’s in their blood (or Crip….), it’s the main reason The W has been neglected by mainstream fans for the past decade. The music may be just as quality, and the emcees just as talented, but if the majority of casual FM fans can’t relate…it isn’t selling. That’s why it’s the music business, not the credibility business. Read the rest of this entry »

Collie Buddz

Dancehall was a fad from 2003 to 2004.”

Regardless of how true that statement is, there are still some decent “authentic” reggeton dancehall artists out there with a lasting sound. One who’s been flying under the radar for a while now is Katrina victim Collie Buddz. Collie has been on the underground scene since about 2006, but it wasn’t until he was signed to Sony and dropped that summertime hit “Come Around.” Read the rest of this entry »

“The C-Quel” – Canibus’ 2000 B.C. (Before Can-I-Bus)

04.01.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By David D.

Man, what about those Davidson Wildcats?

Yes, I’m a student and damn proud. But even if I weren’t attending Davidson, I’d have been rooting for the ‘Cats.

Why?

Like most people, I like the underdog. I always want the scrappy fighter to pull out with the win. Interestingly enough, this same desire applies to my interest in certain Hip-Hop artists. At one point, the biggest underdog I ever wanted to win was Canibus.

The man came out and challenged an LL who was at an all-time high of annoyance. His lip-licking, “something like a phenomenon,” antics were begging for someone to throw rocks at the throne. Canibus was that guy. Read the rest of this entry »
