“To suit an altered music landscape, MTV is planning an untraditional award show celebrating digital music. The network says it’s prepping an as-yet unnamed, multiplatform award show for April or May that will exult digital music and its many varied incarnations. The exact nature of the show hasn’t yet been defined, but MTV says it will be a “multiscreen experience,” including the Internet, social media and mobile — but not broadcast. Categories for awards haven’t been determined, but they’ll include things like best app, best blog, best Internet feud, best music meme of the year and best Kanye West tweet.

“MTV hopes the show will do for digital music what its Video Music Awards did for the music video. Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music and Logo Group, calls the planned show “an interactive musical mess” to celebrate both “the cool and the geekdom.”

“It will be sloppy,” Toffler says. “It will be interactive. It will be customizable. It will be fun and unexpected. Most shows on television are about what’s popular, and I think this will be about what’s bubbling up.”

Back in my day, we demanded our MTV and spent countless hours in front of television sets alternating between it and Nickelodeon. Today’s generation – who I’ve dubbed “the Intangibles” because they’ll grow up having held few if any cd’s, books and magazines – still deems MTV their number one source for music entertainment, except they prefer to visit the web portal instead of the boob tube version. Who’s gonna be the next Jesse Camp?

Remember circa 2000 when MTV held their “Wanna Be A VJ” competition and the winner won a year’s contract with the network? They got to host TRL while Carson Daly was interviewing for Late Late Late Night Show’s and polish Kurt Loder’s loafers, along with whatever other perks came along with the occupation. Since then, videos have become nonexistent while reality shows became the new business model.

Looking for another contest to capture the attention of the masses, MTV wisely turned to Twitter. With social networks serving as king of the land, they felt that it was time to throw their first Twitter Jockey into the fold. 20 contestants will battle until their digits fall off for the grand prize.

They’ve already selected 18 participants and have two slots still open. While the odds are against anyone who applies, I can think of several worthy candidates who frequent our site. Shoot, I might enter myself, even though Twitter moves a bit too fast for me. The initial nomination phase ends at 23:59 on June 27th. All I’m saying is that if one of you rascals manage to win, throw me a few stacks & we’ll call it even.

Drizz Lightyear sat down with MTV (for what, like the fiftenth Monday in a row?) earlier on in the week and basically broke down what we already knew. Mixtapes have become more than just a generic way of staying musically revelvant. It can breed careers. (Or mega-careers like it did with So Far Gone.) When it comes to modern day Virginia, names like Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Clipse, Timbaland and Missy all garner high levels of admiration. Some more than others. But when it comes to the the “face” of the state’s music, it’s pretty safe to say N*E*R*D holds the crown. They’ve received the highest praises from some of music’s biggest names and possess a sound mastered only by them. Having two of your group members honored as the decade’s finest beatsmiths doesn’t hurt your argument either.

As a long time fan, I’ve always wondered what being part of the group would be like. I’d imagine it being nonstop flights around the world touring, recording music and meeting loose women whose favorite activities include doing nose candy and wild sex. Pharrell, Chad and Shay are international stars, you see. They broke through the glass ceiling that is the VA music scene and morphed themselves into musical legends. Rappers scream about rockstar lifestyles. These crazy bastards actually live it.

Speaking of such, MTV’s Diary caught up with the trio in the summer of 2008 while in London for their European tour, or as they refer to it, their “home away from home.” For whatever reasons this was shown only overseas, but it does provide an entertaining glimpse into one of music’s most eccentric entities.
