The Week That Was: The Keep Bouncing Edition

10.02.10 Written by Gotty™

It was another rough and tumble week here @ TSS. Music flowed, conversations abounded and good times were had by all. To keep it simple, we pulled a few of the week’s highlights in case you missed them.

– After taking a couple of media lumps, Katy Perry bounced back quite nicely on SNL and our eyes are thankful.

Mos Def-initely Signed With Kanye

09.28.10 Written by Beware

And why wouldn’t he? Mos doesn’t need to rap, or sing. But, he loves both, and had the option of joining the one man who’s actually getting things done in Hip-Hop and has the game’s most anticipated album dropping in November. Good Ass Job? Nah, this is a G.O.O.D. ass year for Mr. West. Read the rest of this entry »

Kanye West Feat. Raekwon, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz & Charlie Wilson – “Lord, Lord, Lord”

09.18.10 Written by Gotty™

Truth of the matter is that there’s no way that anything G.O.O.D. released on Friday was going to trump their number one space cadet’s Complex tirade. Still, Kanye has a commitment to live up to with G.O.O.D. Music Fridays and dropped “Lord, Lord, Lord” in the night’s waning hours. Read the rest of this entry »

Ski Beatz Feat. Mos Def – “Cream Of The Planet” Video

07.23.10 Written by Gotty™

Pretty Flaco, Ski and the full-sounding Spanish horns all mesh really well together on this latest from 24 Hour Karate School, entitled “Cream Of The Planet.” That release date? Not holding my breath but if it happens… Read the rest of this entry »

Curren$y Feat. Mos Def & Jay Electronica – “The Day”

06.27.10 Written by Gotty™

And what a glorious day it is, as members of the rumored DD172-allied group Center Edge Territory come together for a track. Curren$y continues his use of non sequiturs, pairing them with his stilted, offbeat flow. Jay Elec is still Jay Elec, dropping his verse in authoritative voice that commands attention. Goapele Feat. Mos Def – “Different”

05.09.10 Written by MZ

Here’s an unreleased version of Goapele’s “Different” to tide you over until Milk & Honey comes to fruition. Mos Def Pretty Flaco fills in for Clyde Carson on this alternate take, which thanks to industry politrix never saw the light of day back when Change It All released in ’05.

Thankfully, like most good music, it doesn’t go stale while waiting for its formal introduction. So grab it for your archival & lazy Sunday playlists.

DJ Critical Hype & EscapeMTL Present: The Art Of Kweli Blends

04.15.10 Written by TC

You pronounce the name (Kweli) while DJ Critical Hype & EscapeMTL mix up some of that good-good Reflection Eternal for the soul. Talib Kweli has classics for days, and the lot of them get mixed, mashed and dashed with paprika to continue the many appetizers until RPM is on the table. Read the rest of this entry »

Jay Electronica x Mos Def At Traffic Boutique

04.04.10 Written by David D.

If LC wouldn’t have written her article on Jay Electronica and Blu, I would have. I came back from SXSW fed up and frustrated that I didn’t see them perform. In fact, I was ready to write off both emcees – especially Jay Electronica, who doesn’t even have an album under his belt like Blu does.

I stand before you a changed man. Read the rest of this entry »

Ski Beatz Feat. Stalley, Curren$y, Whosane, Mos Def & Terri Walker – “Aerials”

03.29.10 Written by Beware

Some tracks just feel right. “Aerials” is another product of the Ski Beatz24 Hour Karate School and is one of these extra special exceptions to Murphy’s Law. This movingly melodic mood music features a perfect outward-bound-airplane-based-basis for it’s always percolated pilots; Stalley, Curren$y, Whosane, Terri Walker and Mos Def, forming an uplifting ballad of balance and fortitude. Ski Beatz Feat. Mos Def & Whosane – “Taxi”

03.17.10 Written by Gotty™

I’m starting to realize that “New York rap” could make a return to relevance without relying on overt gimmicks and arrogant loudmouths, constantly proclaiming the city’s rebound. There’s no “king,” as all of those guys have either gotten rich or been usurped by their once loyal supporters. Instead, there’s minor movement being built on the backs of commoners. A motley mix scene vets, been-around-the-block producers, beatniks, label castoffs and transplants, all assuming an avant-garde stance dedicated to reviving not only NY’s sound, by reshaping what we’ve all been subjected to for some time. The music is ripe with an influx of energy and art that’s creating (or perhaps revisiting) a sound that’s moody and delightful. Read the rest of this entry »

Pay Homage: Dilla

02.07.10 Written by Gotty™

Considering the influence Dilla had on the current wave of the culture, there’s more than plenty tributes, mixes and the like floating around out there and they’ll make appearances across the blogsphere all week long. Today, I chose this. Mos Def and Robert Glasper got together in Ann Arbor, MI. covering sixteen tracks of material. Read the rest of this entry »

Jam Session VI With The Roots

02.01.10 Written by TC

If it wasn’t for The Roots, Hip-Hop’s existing poor coverage at the Grammy’s would be damn near Third World. But where there’s a stage, there’s a will and Hip-Hop will shine through regardless of fanfare. Peep a healthy Scott Storch working it out on the keyboard all for the spirit of the music.
