My guy Zo has an uncanny knack for taking unheralded artists and creating compilations for them that their music seem as if the whole world has been in a slumber regarding their talent. A few weeks ago, he hit me up asking if we would post it if he put together a compilation on G-Unit artist Governor. Knowing his meticulous process for selection of artists and mp3s, I didn’t think twice.

From working with 50 Cent before the Get Rich or Die Trying era to Wyclef Jean to T.I. to Dr. Dre to Tom Jones, the singer named Governor [born Governor Washington, Jr.] has engaged in several partnerships with successful artists. Still, he is far from a household name – even within the most hardcore R&B circles, online or off.

Describing his own lane as “soul folk,” Governor’s music blends the classic soul stylings of Sam Cooke and Al Green with a hard yet conscious hip-hop attitude mixing the minds of pre-Death Row Tupac and, in a sense, Death Row Tupac. The Country Rhythm, City Blues mixtape serves as a showcase of Governor’s numerous collaborations plus rare tracks, blends, remixes, and guest appearances which all come together to bring Governor’s voice into the light. Sporting heavyweight sounds throughout, the mixtapes features production credits from the likes of Dr. Dre, Wyclef, Track Masters, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, Mannie Fresh, and Khao.

Most recently heard on 50 Cent’s latest single, “Do You Think About Me,” Governor will be dropping a new album in 2010.”

It looks as if Asher’s taking a quieter approach, serving up only a handful of leaks preceding the arrival of the full course meal. Presented by DJ Wreckineyez, Seared Foie Gras With Quince And Cranberry (what a name) features a handful of guest features – Talib, Blu, Pac Div and others – as well as Asher holding it down on his own over well-cooked production “served” by the likes of Just Blaze, Timbaland and Kanye. When I saw Neil last November, he told me a couple of his “don’t say nothing” ideas & plans. Little did he know he didn’t have to worry; I have the memory and retention of a snail. The adidas collaborative project with Star Wars? One that stuck with me since there’s the whole dislike I have of adidas that lead to me ribbin’ Neil for being affiliated with such wackness. Of course, that idea came to fruition & worked well for all parties involved, bolstered by the commercial with Neil and others plus the wild publicity Snoop garnered by trooping NYC with Darth Vader.

Another idea on the hush was his plans to compile a mix that documented Jay’s Blueprint series, bringing back a few of the hits, spotlighting a few of the influences and sample sources, etc. Since he’s not on this leg of the The BP3 tour (a missing element, for sure), it looks like Neil finally had a chance to put together the mix and The DNA Of The Blueprint is the final outcome of his original idea. I saw it posted on several sites last week, most giving it favorable coverage while others didn’t hold it in regard with Neil’s previous mixes (Jay-Z backlash by association, maybe?). Moi? Obviously, I’m obviously biased, my listening perspective favoring both Jay’s music and Neil’s mixes.

“This project is my personal way of putting a distinctive bookmark in this chapter in my life, and a way to pass a sincere thank you to Jay-Z, Mr. Sean Carter, for all of the memories, the opportunity to rock on stage as an artist with him around the world, and for the kindness to me as a person. In fact, I think just about everybody in the Crew cosigns this guy. And the mix features production from Black Milk, DJ Babu, Apollo Brown and Wajeed and features from Slum Village’s T3, Guilty Simpson & Trick Trick. Rock Steady’s DV One back with another Monday morning podcast delivery that revolves around pimpin’ and pandering music, or as he so eloquently put it “instead of a soundtrack its the track sound.” Well worth a listen because you can forget simply moving through genres; DV moves through decades of recognizable tracks. But each one is hand selected, making it all seem as if each song was originally made with the intent of putting a battery in the back of macks (and wannabees too).
