Emilio Rojas – Life Without Shame Mixtape (No DJ Version)

02.24.11 Written by Beware

If you’re not aware by now, there’s a new promotional gimmick going on in Hip-Hop. Since consistency on blogs is now almost more important for budding artists than radio play, keeping their buzz afloat means delivering more reasons for your name to be posted and your music to be heard. Generally, mixtapes have been the most accepted form of doing so, but in recent months change has come and the DJ-free, untagged version of said street releases has now taken the crown of most coveted. Mistah F.A.B. – Prince Of The Coast Mixtape

02.13.10 Written by Corey Bloom

As fan for a minute, I can honestly say this is the Mistah F.A.B. album I have wanted to hear for some time now. In the past, he’s succeeded with a calculated balance on each album. Countering every street/Hyphy song there was always a joint where he flipped the dialog and spit from the heart. Don’t get it twisted, I’ll ride for “Super Sic Wit It” and “Sideshow” as much as the next, but his talent was so abundant it was clear he was capable of something impactful beyond the club.

With Prince Of The Coast, we get just that. The stories are vast and descriptive, the truths he speaks on are engaging and filled with emotion, and on the Rap tip I don’t think many people can fuck with him lyrically. All substance, not filler on this one so clear any preconceived ideas of what F.A.B. is or what Bay Area Hip-Hop sounds like and enjoy it for everything it is.

Joell Ortiz & Novel – Defying The Predictable Mixtape

02.05.10 Written by MZ

If you were to go by the title alone, you’d expect this tape to be of otherworldly proportions.  But even if it somehow manages to somehow miss their lofty goals, their standard output easily outpaces most of their contemporaries.  So the outcome of either scenario should be a win for listeners. Yesterday, Joe G. slide this to my e-doorstep. Aside from that, I’ll just say you should be entertained since the sneaker homies managed to pick up a few notable features (Wale, Fashawn & Blu) and solid production. And when you’re working with a messageboard of thousands, pulling together a project of this nature is the equivalent of wrangling wild broncos. Read the rest of this entry »

DJ Skee x TSS Present Freddie Gibbs The Labels Tryin To Kill Me

the-labels-tryin-to-kill-me-front_highres

When we posted the first prominent “blog post” on behalf of Freddie Gibbs way back in April, the goal wasn’t to create some overly-hyped Internet sensation but more so to showcase the talents of an MC with the power to accomplish that on his merit; through the power of rhyme. Plenty of anomalies, great music and achieved expectations have been made since then, which brings us full circle to this point.
