For his first headlining gig in rap’s capital, Gangsta Gibbs didn’t play it safe. The vast majority of those in attendance at the Highline Ballroom two weeks ago were never going to be rapping along with Gibbs bar for bar with him still being new and all, so he took the opportunity to debut some new music. The last solo set delivered by Freddie Gibbs on a New York City stage was rudely cut short. Apparently, sparking an L while rockin’ the mic is a no-go downtown at SOBs. Hopefully (if Freddie hasn’t learned his lesson), the rules will be different some 20 blocks north at the Highline Ballroom. Come next Tuesday, Gangsta Gibbs will headline his first NYC show, with the likes of hometown head and consummate showman Mickey Factz, in addition to Das Racist, also set to hit the stage. You also probably realize it is one of the rawest, yet most honest releases in a long while as well. The young man hailing from the same city the Jacksons made famous is poised to potentially become the next big star out of the Midwest. Recently, I had a chance to chop it up with Gibbs about his mindset as he recorded the aforementioned mixtape. FSD checks in with Gary, Indiana’s own Freddie Gibbs, while he was in Chicago on Monday night (more like Tuesday morning) to record a track with Mikkey Halsted for Fake Shore Drive & producer Maja 7th’s collaboration mixtape The Breakout.

Here we find Gangsta Gibbs live from Soundscape Studios after laying his verse and hook for “On My Own”, which will be the first official release from the project. Gibbs talks about his latest mixtape: midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, leaving Interscope Records, supporting the Midwest movement, being a rapper from Gary, IN in Los Angeles, his influences (some might surprise you), and divulges that he sings his own hooks (which is something I didn’t know). He also discusses upcoming projects and video plans.

Word up. A video for every track on midwest… just might be Rickey Retardo.
