Let’s face it: there will never be another Wu-Tang Clan. The legacy, impact and influence the populous collective from Staten Island have engraved in the culture’s skin has hardened and scabbed over, leaving an eternal brand. If you trace along the lines of the “W” tattoo, the rich history of the Clan tells many tales. Our favorite Wu-Gambinos are back as they ramp up preparations for their upcoming Wu-Massacre release.  Much like the trailer which came out a few months back, the video for “Our Dreams” leaves you with as many questions as it does answers.  Despite the wringer they’re trying to put us through, you can do lot worse than Starks, Tical & Chef spitting with the visuals provided by Rik & the 3/21 gang.  Perhaps in due time, they’ll let us in on the surprise.

Plus that sample, along with the way RZA flips it between the verses and chorus, is a thing of beauty.  Damn near gave chills the first time I played it.

Politically, economically and culturally, a lot has changed since December 31, 1999. In terms of music, the past ten years has seen a seismic shift in the way we consume music and in turn has profoundly influenced how music is made. In ‘99 we were still in the midst of the compact disc era (although I was snagging tunes off shared dorm room drives for the first time and had just installed WinAmp on my computer).

As any chef worth his stuff will sum up: you can’t rush fine cooking. Granted, most recipes don’t require 14 years of preparatory time, but Raekwon obviously wanted to make sure he had the sequel to his all-time classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… done just right. 14 years is a few lifetimes in Hip-Hop, and the Wu’s admitted, slow steady drift from the center of the Hip-Hop universe had critics rightly questioning whether another Cuban Linx… would sully the legend of the original Indiana Jones 4 style. Luckily for Hip-Hop fans, the wait is worth it. With Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II, Raekwon has created a reflection and re-imagination of the original with the same cinematic storytelling, fire-spitting guests, and grim beats that made the Wu legends in the first place.
