Music fans rejoice, The Kid Daytona lets loose his year-ending mixtape The Interlude II, sequel to 2010′s acclaimed release bearing the same name. As his stock continues to blossom along with universal recognition, the second part of the series looks to elevate the Bronx emcee’s name beyond the blogs and into iPods and car stereos of a new audience. Musically, it’s everything you’d expect from Daytona, but better. His trademark unique sound has matured, enhanced only by his ever-improving intricate lyricism and narrative ability. The fact that Melanie Fiona wins me over without having to prace around half naked is one of the glaring reasons why I appreciate her music so much. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t a damn thing wrong with looking all googly-eyed at the gyrations of Rihanna, but from a personal standpoint (i.e. whose album I’d be more inclined to buy), I’m siding with Fiona. I love Melanie Fiona. I told her I’d admit it. I hope one day we get married just to say…nevermind you know the rest. No lie though, I was this close to using a picture of the gorgeous songstress, but decided to give Stephen Marley his just due. Later this year, Marley’s Revelation Part 1: The Book Of Life will complete the next chapter in the constantly evolving biography of one of music’s most storied families. “No Cigarette Smoke (In My Room)” is a relaxing audio massage of vibes heaven sent to cure the stresses of the day. The combination of Steve’s charisma and Fiona’s buttery soul make this an instant addition to the iTunes library and one that will continue to get play for awhile.

No cigarette smoke is allowed in the room, but I can think of something else that will be sparked because of this collaboration.

Fab 5′s opening remark that “pay tribute to the legends of the past and introduce the legends of the future” is accurate. There will come a time when The Roots & John Legend will see their names revered and referenced as good music from this time period, the same way my pops proudly speaks of Jackie Wilson, Motown greats and artists of the archetype. I’m an unapologetic fan of Boosie and think Gucci Mane has progressed as a rhymer, but realistically speaking, I don’t see them being beacons that I want my grandkids to look back on and judge me by.

I think it’s safe to say Melanie Fiona has officially made it. As if The Bridge’s critical and commercial success weren’t convincing enough or opening nightly for Alicia Keys’ Freedom Tour weren’t indication enough, she’s now been asked to sit down for a Soundcheck interview, a seat reserved for pop princesses, musical powerhouses and creative geniuses.
