Jay-Z & Timbaland Slammed With A $5 Million Lawsuit Over “Big Pimpin’” Sample

07.30.11 Written by TC

It seems like everybody is watching Jiggaman’s “throne” these days, vying for a piece of the pie. In the latest attempt of cracking Jay-Z’s multi-million dollar safe, AllHipHop.com reports that Ahab Joseph Nafal is suing him and super-producer Timbaland for the usage of Baligh Hamdi’s “Khosara, Khosara,” in their smash hit “Big Pimpin’,” along with Roc-A-Fella Records, Def Jam Records, Warner Music Group and Linkin Park (for remixing the track off their Grammy Award-winning album, Collision Course). 06.13.11 Written by Gotty™

These guys are a rare breed. If you’re keeping count, they’ve just been hit with their third lawsuit in a seven day span. Bridgeport Music Inc. filed suit claiming Weezy F. Baby, Baby and everybody who’s ever had a baby in New Orleans illegally swiped George Clinton & Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain” for use in Wayne & Birdman’s “Army Gunz” track for 2006′s Like Father, Like Son album. Puffy Knocked Down The World Trade Center?

Write this down. Here’s one instance in life where I may have to side with Puffy. Multiple infractions which indicate insanity here – including suing Puff for $900M – but dragging Rodney King’s good name into the fray seals the deal. Read the rest of this entry »

Rookie rapper beware. Those not-so-obscure samples will come back to bite and stick their hands in your pocket at the same time. In light of his recent accomplishments, Drake has encountered a little problem. The song which propelled him to household name status from 2009′s So Far Gone allegedly incorporates a sample from Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds 1975 hit “Fallin’ In Love.” Read the rest of this entry »

Rick Ross Wants His Name Back From Rick Ross

05.26.10 Written by Gotty™

With his very logical reasons related to money aside, I guess it does suck having to go to the bank and say “No, I’m the real Rick Ross. The real drug dealer, not the fake rapper from Florida.” Actually, I get confused with the other John Gotti quite frequently so I feel Mr. Ross’ pain.

Now that the real “Freeway” Rick Ross, is out of jail he’s ready to reclaim the rights to his name. The infamous L.A.-based drug trafficker is planning a lawsuit against Miami rapper Rick Ross (real name William L. Roberts II), for profiting off the unlawful use of his name, along with Def Jam, Universal, and others. XXLmag.com spoke to both Ross and his lawyers today (May 25) to find out more about their case. Universal Records Disgraces King Of Pop

01.29.10 Written by Beware

Imagine if every time you were cruising your whip, getting down to a jam, the record label of said song sent you a subpoena saying you didn’t have the rights to sing-along. The word “appalled” comes to mind, or maybe even “dumbfounded.” Either way, that’s exactly what’s happening to Michael Jackson, or to his estate rather. Read the rest of this entry »

“Give’em A Taste Of Their Own Medicine…”

new-balance-x-louis-vuitton

It looks like someone @ Louis Vuitton may have gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar, as New Balance is suing the designer brand for trademark infringement.

Boston’s New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. is suing LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, accusing the luxury goods company of copying its best-selling casual sneaker. New Balance claims Louis Vuitton’s Minstrel shoe is virtually identical to its 574 sneaker introduced in the mid-1990s.

LV needed a nice lawsuit for this fuckery anyways because…

1. LV’s sneaker retails for $590, while you can score a pair of 574′s for less than $60 @ Shoe Carnival, as its one NB’s lower-priced but best selling models (20 million-plus pairs sold since 2002). I’ve owned a couple of pairs of LV’s and the leather is always beautiful. Yet there’s no way I’d pay that exorbitant amount for anything less than the finest Italian cow ass. “Bad Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal.”

02.06.09 Written by MZ

For the unfamiliar, the title is actually a quote by Pablo Picasso and has to do with drawing inspiration from something while putting your touch on it. There’s a thin line between blatantly jacking someone’s idea and flipping it enough to make it your own. It’s not an unfamiliar concept to Hip-Hop, with sampling and copyright infringement banging heads since Biz Markie’s “I Need A Haircut.” I’ve never been a fan of copyright laws because of the sheer amount of Hip-Hop songs that have never seen the light of day because some forgotten artist hates the genre and doesn’t clear the sample. Shepard Fairey, the creator of the now iconic image above, is being sued by the AP for not getting proper permission to use the image in his design. Read the rest of this entry »

“Rugged Neva Smooth Sued…”

10.31.08 Written by David D.

There has been a lot of hoopla over the last few years about the similarities between Hip-Hop and WWE with all of the staged fights, slick talking and fake retirements. What many don’t realize is that there have been a few battles between wrestlers and rappers. And no, I’m not talking about the No Limit Soldiers fiasco from WCW that spawned a music video masterpiece.

Just this week, M.O.P. sued John Cena over the sampling of their song in what is the most recent in a list of rapper versus wrestler courtroom beefs.

Would You Have Bought A kPod?

The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don’t mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don’t think of original ideas, and they don’t bring much culture into their products. – Steve Jobs – The Triumph of the Nerds (1996)

I bet Steve Jobs would like to strike that quote from the record now that US courts have acknowledged a British man as the creator of the iPod. Kane Kramer, 52, attained a worldwide patent in 1979 after inventing and building a working model of his device which he called the IXI. Due to technological limitations at the time it only could play 3.5 minutes of audio. On top of that he dropped out of school at 15! Read the rest of this entry »
