Did Barbara Walters Get Dissed?

03.05.10 Written by Gotty™

Reader Keynote sent this one.

“Hey, TSS, fam,

I fully expect to see a TSS entry on this tomorrow.

Barbara Walters was a guest on tonight’s episode, and The Roots chose “Crooklyn Dodgers Vol. 2″ as her entrance music. Great subliminal dis. But just to drive the point home, Black Thought does his best Chubbster impersonation and actually spits the relevant lines from his verse while Walters was walking on stage:

‘Now clock, kids, who got the cocaine?
Don’t tell me it’s the little kids on Soul Train
The meta-force it I put my brain to my jaw
It comes from other places, not the tinted faces
Journalistic values are yellow and then of course falters
You watch Channel Zero with that chick Barbara Walters’

Either Walters was oblivious and didn’t catch it, or she no-sells the reaction completely. Hilarious for the handful of Hip-Hop heads who bothered to tune in.”

Well, Keynote, Barbara Walters is old. We’re talking borderline senility old. We’re talking old enough to remember when the Dutch ran NYC. She was obviously up past her bedtime. It was all she could do to make that walk without falling and cracking a hip. That rap crap blaring in the background? She was indeed oblivious to it.

But kudos to the legendary Roots crew for the ballsy song selection that flew right past Barb, the unsuspecting audience…and probably Fallon too. And, Keynote, thanks for helping get everybody’s Friday off on the right foot!

Video: Erykah Badu Performs “Window Seat” Live On The Fallon Show

03.04.10 Written by Gotty™

Badu took to Fallon’s stage last night to perform “Window Seat” with The Roots playing the backbeat. From each lyric to the “need someone to clap for me” refrain at the breakdown, everything about this track is close to perfection. Now, enjoy the beauty of it now before urban radio fully latches on & browbeats us to death with it.

And here’s to hoping @FatBellyBella sets the trend and more women start rocking throwback Olivia Newton-John aerobics gear. Or did even she find her inspiration from American Apparel girl from the Oakland bus fight? Imagine the chick two cubicles over wearing a leotards to work? Wooohooo! Let the trend begin!

Talk About Bad Taste…

02.04.10 Written by Beware

Wow.

If you thought Late Night With Jimmy Fallon itself was bad, how about this unsettling lunch menu NBC offer(ed) ‘in honor of’ of Black History Month? Questlove obviously didn’t think too highly of it, as he TwitPic’ed the snapshot on @questlove, while pointing a big, black finger at NBC’s Public Relations department, who immediately issued a retraction.

I bet Popeyes is pissed they lost a whole month of catering.

TSS Inferno: The Week In People That Suck

01.16.10 Written by David D.

Maybe it’s been the amount of free time I’ve had this week, but I’ve been catching up with this television show called The News and it’s pretty interesting. I’ve learned a lot. The biggest thing I’ve learned has been that there are a lot of people out in the world that suck. Not in the sexy way either.

Then, the wildest thing happened the other day. I was walking around the woods and some guy named Virgil took me on a trip. He showed me a few circles of Hell and where each of this week’s evildoers will end. Can someone remind me to re-up on my ‘shrooms when this list is done? Read the rest of this entry »

This was something the crowd has been waiting for. DJ Heat compiled the tracks. The artwork is by Shake. The music is by the LNWJF house band – otherwise known to Hip-Hop fans as The Roots – and the various musical guests who’ve made appearances on the show over the past few months. Add this to the same playlist as your Sandwiches and you’ve got a power-packed jam session going on. Read the rest of this entry »

Video: The Clipse Feat. The Roots – “Popular Demand” Live On LNWJF

01.07.10 Written by MZ

Cam’ron’s no-show was our gain when the Clipse performed on The Roots’ Variey Show Jimmy Fallon Show.  Draped in a Play Clothes varsity, “the best duo ever” (Pusha’s words, not mine) became a trio for the night with Black Thought filling in for Killa.  Maybe I had the video too small, but I didn’t even know it was Black until he opened his mouth, I just assumed he took the opportunity to grab a drink of water or something. Have A Sandwich Courtesy Of The Roots

the-roots-on-fallon

Late Night With Jimmy Fallon is still on the air for two reasons.

1: To prove that God has a sense of humor.  There are roughly 6,755,987,238 people more qualified to helm that show.

2. God’s also a fan of The Roots and he felt it was time for them to become stationary and for the people to come to them.  They’ve paid their dues tenfold and if the show must go on for them to do that, so be it.

So keep up the good work Jimmy! Read the rest of this entry »

“Simmer Down, Simmer Down Now”

06.11.09 Written by TSSCrew

mos-defWords by Jesse H.

In continuing with his energized and welcome return to the realm of rapping music, Mos Def’s been hitting the television circuit as he performed “Quiet Dog” on The David Letterman Show and  “Casa Bey” from his upcoming The Ecstatic on Tuesday night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, backed by The Roots.

Not surprisingly, the live band transition made for a slick expanded instrumental with the added bonus of Black Thought’s underrated accentual singing.

Mos rocked the delivery too, impressively ad-libbing while singing and hitting every flow transition with impeccable timing. Hit the break for the footage. Read the rest of this entry »
