On Questlove, J Dilla & The Backstory Of Black Star’s “Little Brother”

01.04.12 Written by Jason H.

Last night Black Star performed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon but I fell asleep. Thank goodness for the Internet otherwise I would’ve forever missed their performance of “Little Brother” and, more importantly, Questlove sharing the song’s intriguing backstory on the show’s site. Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa Feat. Juicy J – “Smoke On”

12.06.11 Written by Gotty™

Weed always creates a tie that binds not only regular folks, but artists as well. When Wiz & Snoop announced their new movie and its accompanying soundtrack, I was initially side-eyeing both the artists and the ideas as a calculated money-grab capitalizing off their stoner association and didn’t expect anything worthwhile to emerge. To my surprise, the end products haven’t been that bad thus far. Read the rest of this entry »

Michele Bachmann’s Still Disappointed, Fishbone Couldn’t Be Happier

11.28.11 Written by Gotty™

In an interview with KLIF radio in Dallas on Friday, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann shared that she still wasn’t pleased with NBC’s response to the “Lying Ass Bitch” controversy. The GOP candidate did receive a written apology from a higher-up at NBC – the senior vice president for special programs to be exact – but apparently the atonement wasn’t sufficient in Bachmann’s eyes. Michele Bachmann Cries “Sexism,” NBC Execs & Jimmy Fallon Apologize

11.24.11 Written by TSSCrew

EW:

Appearing on Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom this morning, Bachmann addressed the Late Night controversy: “I wasn’t aware of it at all. I didn’t find out until later yesterday, and at that point, I was traveling and making my way to the presidential debate,” she said. “I am hoping to be able to speak to Jimmy Fallon today. I don’t have anything against Jimmy Fallon. I love him, he’s a kick. It was a great opportunity to be on the show. I’d love to go back again. But I think the point is, if that had been Michelle Obama who had come out on the stage, and if that song had been played for Michelle Obama, I have no doubt that NBC would have apologized to her and likely they could have fired the drummer, at least suspended him. None of that happened from NBC. And this is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite, but it’s also, I think, sexism as well. This wouldn’t be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama; it shouldn’t be tolerated if it’s a conservative woman either.”

Yahoo:

The Minnesota congresswoman received a personal letter from NBC’s vice president for late night programming, Doug Vaughan, a day after she appeared on the show. As Bachmann walked onstage, the show’s band had played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song entitled “Lyin’ Ass B—-.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Roots Serenade Michele Bachmann With “Lying Ass Bitch”

11.22.11 Written by TSSCrew

Yahoo:

“Jimmy Fallon’s house band the Roots didn’t have a warm welcome for Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann when she appeared on the NBC show early Tuesday. As Bachmann strode on to the stage at Fallon’s “Late Night,” the show’s band played a snippet of a 1985 Fishbone song called “Lyin’ Ass Bitch.” Read the rest of this entry »

Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon Drop “The History Of Rap 3″

10.29.11 Written by Gotty™

Last night was Justin Timberlake-time again on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The singer-turned-actor had a new film (In Time) to promote and – as he and Fallon have done previously with parts one and two – Timberlake went above just sitting on the couch, choosing instead to rap it up with the show’s host for “The History Of Rap 3.” Read the rest of this entry »

Odd Future – “Sandwitches” Live On Jimmy Fallon

– Supreme’s upcoming Spring line will be increasingly more difficult to obtain. Yes, more than usual. There’s a sweatshirt I want too.

– ?uesto obviously did not warn Fallon of last night’s music act, Odd Future. The other guests weren’t given a heads up either. Whoever the chick is, she probably had to smoke something to take the edge off afterwards. Read the rest of this entry »

Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon Cover Rap’s History

10.01.10 Written by Raj

I hate Jimmy Fallon. I hate his stand-ups. I hate his SNL sketches. I hate his late night show. If you haven’t guessed by now, I really don’t like that guy. He’s just not funny and I find Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to be blander than the instant oatmeal my roommate eats every morning. I watched its premier because I wanted to see The Roots and I haven’t watched an episode since. Read the rest of this entry »

Suzanne Vega x The Roots “Tom’s Diner” On Late Night With Fallon

Duh uh DUH uh duh duh da…”

Grew up in the ’80s? Yeah, no way avoiding the automatic foot-tapping that happens as soon as you hear the bassline for “Tom’s Diner.” Suzanne Vega stops by The Roots late night jam spot to do a rendition of the one song we all know her for, even if we only know that monosyllabic line. Did Barbara Walters Get Dissed?

03.05.10 Written by Gotty™

Reader Keynote sent this one.

“Hey, TSS, fam,

I fully expect to see a TSS entry on this tomorrow.

Barbara Walters was a guest on tonight’s episode, and The Roots chose “Crooklyn Dodgers Vol. 2″ as her entrance music. Great subliminal dis. But just to drive the point home, Black Thought does his best Chubbster impersonation and actually spits the relevant lines from his verse while Walters was walking on stage:

‘Now clock, kids, who got the cocaine?
Don’t tell me it’s the little kids on Soul Train
The meta-force it I put my brain to my jaw
It comes from other places, not the tinted faces
Journalistic values are yellow and then of course falters
You watch Channel Zero with that chick Barbara Walters’

Either Walters was oblivious and didn’t catch it, or she no-sells the reaction completely. Hilarious for the handful of Hip-Hop heads who bothered to tune in.”

Well, Keynote, Barbara Walters is old. We’re talking borderline senility old. We’re talking old enough to remember when the Dutch ran NYC. She was obviously up past her bedtime. It was all she could do to make that walk without falling and cracking a hip. That rap crap blaring in the background? She was indeed oblivious to it.

But kudos to the legendary Roots crew for the ballsy song selection that flew right past Barb, the unsuspecting audience…and probably Fallon too. And, Keynote, thanks for helping get everybody’s Friday off on the right foot!

Video: Erykah Badu Performs “Window Seat” Live On The Fallon Show

03.04.10 Written by Gotty™

Badu took to Fallon’s stage last night to perform “Window Seat” with The Roots playing the backbeat. From each lyric to the “need someone to clap for me” refrain at the breakdown, everything about this track is close to perfection. Now, enjoy the beauty of it now before urban radio fully latches on & browbeats us to death with it.

And here’s to hoping @FatBellyBella sets the trend and more women start rocking throwback Olivia Newton-John aerobics gear. Or did even she find her inspiration from American Apparel girl from the Oakland bus fight? Imagine the chick two cubicles over wearing a leotards to work? Wooohooo! Let the trend begin!
