Imagine a label that’s figured it all out.

Imagine the record execs sitting at a board meeting, looking at their financial numbers, in a panic over the state of the company and the music industry in general. The company’s Hip-Hop sales have struggled – a waning roster thinned out by incarcerations and mental breakdowns has crushed the label’s star power. Suffering three years of delays at the corporate hands of Atlantic Records, and facing the threat of an expiration-less shelf life, Lupe Fiasco decides to compromise on his third studio album, Lasers and make those few bastardy radio-pop singles in order to achieve the greater goal of getting the album out to the public ear. What started off as a request for a couple harmless, attention-grabbing tracks mutated into an all-out combat between the two parties, as song after song was scrapped from the tracklist. Watching his career path over the last three years has been depressing. It’s a guarantee no one else would use the words Bill O’Reilly, Quran, George Bush and Iran quite the way Lupe does in “All Black Everything” and envisioning early Eminem as the socially excepted Hip-Hop norm while a black rapper fights to be heard is just as unprecedented. Lupe owns an impeccable, albeit short discography yet pretty much everything he’s done outside of retail releases is nearly forgettable aside from his early Fahrenheit releases. And despite having more stalls than Diddy’s last train, Lasers has finally received an official release date along with some sort of push from Atlantic and we can finally pay attention to him again. Media swore Lupe’s machine was out of control as evidenced by a temporarily shelved album, well publicized label politics, blog “bans” and a protest tagged to his name. Then Mr. Fiasco returned things to normalcy with a few key features, a release date and a lead single in “The Show Goes On.” The song’s title and underdog theme may sound like a response to much of the flack he’s received. There was a time when I would have fought hard for Lupe. Now, not so much. That’s not to say I’m not a fan of dude’s work and won’t support it when the time comes because I will.
