It All Comes Down To This: Grizzlies Vs. Thunder, Game 7

05.15.11 Written by Gotty™

The OKC-Memphis series originally presented itself as a stopping point, the Thunder one step removed from reaching the Western Conference Finals and achieving destiny. Instead, the Grizzlies showed up and, by playing completely above their heads, have turned it into a slugfest upstaging most other series. Read the rest of this entry »

The 2011 NBA All-Stars: Picks Vs. Snubs

02.07.11 Written by S.Cadet

Ahh, the All-Star selections. It’s this time of year where a collective groan lets out from basketball nerds across the internet. This year’s ASG rosters has some good picks, but they leave much to be desired as usual. More importantly, there isn’t much leeway for replacement picks so far. All the players involved are either healthy or expected to heal from injuries, outside of the dubious fan vote for Yao Ming. That means there’s a bunch of “maybe next year” denial letters to hand out when the break rolls around. Read the rest of this entry »

Charlie Villanueva Is A Snitch

11.03.10 Written by TC

The headlines read “Kevin Garnett Called Charlie Villanueva A Cancer Patient.” I’d rather you hone in my title instead. Sure, now that the off-color comment has hit the national media, it paints KG as an insensitive, immoral asshole but the context given was trash talk. Off-the-record, on-the-court, unadulterated trash talk. It has been around since the days of peach baskets and will be around long after they make hologram ones. Read the rest of this entry »

2010 NBA Playoff Finals Preview: Los Angeles Lakers Vs. Boston Celtics

06.03.10 Written by TSSCrew

Just in case you’ve spent the last 50 years of your life taking stool samples of rhesus monkeys in the forests of Thailand and have missed the Celtics-Lakers rivalry in its entirety, here’s a brief recap. The 1960s Celtics made the Lakers into their personal Washington Generals, beating them six times in the Finals in less than a decade. In the 80s, Magic and Kareem finally exacted revenge against Larry Legend and company as the two titans of the NBA traded titles while simultaneously raising the league to newfound heights of popularity. The Lakers continued to reign supreme in the NBA throughout the last few decades while Boston entered what can only be known as the Dark Ages of the franchise. The rivalry was thought to be dead.

That is, until two years ago, when a few shrewd trades from both front offices returned both teams to their rightful places in the NBA hierarchy: battling for supremacy on the respective sport’s biggest stage. This time it was the Celtics that prevailed, embarrassing the Lakers and their golden boy Kobe Bryant with a 39-point blowout victory in a clinching Game 6. Undeterred, the Lakers bounced back to snag their own title in 2009, while Kevin Garnett’s knee injury prevented Boston from defending their crown.

The teams took different roads to get back to the mountain top in 2010. L.A. rode home court advantage and a vintage Kobe hot streak, while Boston rediscovered their defensive dominance and late-game execution after a shoddy regular season. Ultimately none of it matters as it’s time for both the rubber match of the last three years and the 12th installment of this classic showdown. Lakers. Celtics. Kobe. KG. The Truth. The Zen Master. Fake boobies for Laker Fans. Big Baby’s boobies for the Irish. If you can’t get excited about this, you need to seriously consider a cocaine addiction. To get you ready for tonight’s Game 1 tip-off, the TSS NBA Crew breaks down the matchups and makes their predictions on who will be laughing last. Read the rest of this entry »

TSS 2010 NBA Playoff Preview: Eastern Conference Semi-Finals – Boston Celtics Vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

05.01.10 Written by TSSCrew

Before we get things started, let’s take a look back at a few things we’ve learned from the first round.

The NBA is both a players & coaches league: Since the NBA is star driven, we’ve been conditioned to think that coaches don’t matter.  As seen in the Denver/Utah series, coaches matter a lot under the right circumstances.  The absence of George Karl hurt the Nuggets immensely, who looked downright clueless with Adrian Dantley manning the ship.  While the Jazz looked unstoppable running the system that Jerry Sloan’s had in place since the days of Methuselah.  From a talent standpoint, both teams were pretty even matched.  Deron Williams had his showing out party, but the difference were the men who drew the X’s & O’s.

Injuries can hurt & help a team: Injuries were the talk of the league leading up to the playoffs, as vital players suffered both minor & major injuries as the season winded down.  But going back to Utah, the loss of Mehmet Okur played a pivotal part in their win as well.   It freed up more time for the likes of Paul Milsap, C.J. Miles & Wesley Matthews.  What they lost in Okur’s shooting was more than made up in better defensive match-ups and a balanced scoring attack.

You’ve got to be able to win on the road: Regardless of whether the Hawks win game seven or not, any team that is a bad on the road as they are will always be pretenders.

Never count out those veteran laden teams: Both Boston & San Antonio had up and down seasons with rosters built (& only care about) what happens once the 82 game season is over.  Be it pacing their selves, finally recovering from injuries or increased Geritol doses, both teams were able to turn it on once the playoffs started. So until the teams are dissembled, you can never count them out.

Cleveland Cavaliers Vs. Boston Celtics

There’s a bout going down on Saturday and we’re not talking about Mayweather vs. Mosley. With Lebron James’ elbow hurt, look for him to go to the rack early and often in this series. The old timers should give Cleveland a scare as the Cavs have a propensity to be too reliant on Lebron. Boston’s attack is simply more balanced with more dependable scorers and a defense, like Cleveland’s, that can put the clamps on down the stretch. For Boston to be the first team to four wins, “the big three” have to play like it every single game.

Ray has to knock down shots, Pierce has to prove why he is one of the more clutch players in the league and Garnett has to do more than yell and attempt to scare people. Which is a stretch at this point, on top of the fact that the C’s bench is too weak, thanks to the dud acquisitions of Sheed, Marquis Daniels and Nate Robinson. For Cleveland, it’s simple – just provide enough help for LeBron so he can take over the last four minutes of the game.

An Open Letter To David Stern

04.26.10 Written by Patrick M.

Mr. Commissioner,

I know you’re as excited for the NBA offseason as anyone. Typically July and August are dead zones for the NBA as the sports world is focused on baseball, the NFL preseason and whatever US Weekly style floater ESPN can drum up about A-Rod or Tiger Woods. Not this year though. Nope, we’re in for two months of LeBron getting his attention-whore on as he makes every franchise genuflect before him in hopes of wooing him to their franchise. With D-Wade, Bosh, Amare and all the other marquee free agents up for grabs as well, the league’s going year round. Read the rest of this entry »

TSS 2010 NBA Playoff Preview: The First Round – Part One

04.17.10 Written by TSSCrew

It’s time for the NBA playoffs and it couldn’t have come at a better time.  Baseball’s just warming up & a few months from warranting paying attention to it.  Only thing popping off with football is the draft & spring practices in college.  Hockey’s playoffs have begun, but you can’t even find those games on TV if you wanted to.  The Lakers appear to be in prime position to repeat, but there are capable teams in both conferences standing in the wings & waiting to take it off their hands.  Which makes the NBA playoffs the hot ticket, the intensity picks as the O’Brien trophy is the ultimate prize. I think I hate adidas right now. They’ve got Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Kevin Garnett, Chauncey Billups, Tracy McGrady, Tim Duncan, Michael Beasley and Josh Smith, all in one commercial. I don’t think I hate adidas as much as I’m looking @ Nike, wondering who let all these top tier names (okay, decent names @ least) slide past them. Read the rest of this entry »

TSS NBA Playoffs Review: The Conference Finals

And then there were two. Kobe vs. LeBron Dwight.  The Lakers vs. The Magic for the Larry O’Brien trophy.  Both teams won in convincing fashion to seal the deal.  You’d be hard pressed to find too many people who had this matchup a few weeks ago.  Shoot… Pat only had the Cavs not making it after consulting with Vivica, Ms. Cleo & Dionne Warwick about his beloved Celtics.  On the bright side David Stern & Phil Knight won’t have to hear conspiracy theories on the Read the rest of this entry »

TSS NBA Playoffs Review: The First Round

05.04.09 Written by MZ

With the Hawks dispatching of the Heat yesterday, the first round of the NBA Playoffs came to a close.  The Rockets finally got out of the first round (so did Carmelo) and the Celtics barely made it out.  Detroit witnessed the end of an era and it may not have hit them yet; but San Antonio could have as well.  The Lakers found little trouble with Utah and Orlando prevailed in tough series.

We saw many a great games and the second round should produce even more.  But before we move ahead we’ll see how everyone did with their first round predictions.  Time to see who knew what they were talking about and who was misled by talking heads.

Patrick M. lead the way by picking all eight series’ correctly, as well as 3 series lengths.  MZ picked seven correctly.  S. Cadet picked six correctly and Jesse H. got five.

So the standings are as follows (correct team – 1 point. correct length – 1/2 point):

Patrick M. – 9 1/2 points

MZ – 7 1/2 points

S. Cadet – 7 points

Jesse H. – 6 points
