Words By Jada G.

John Coltrane creates a masterpiece from imperfectly-crafted chaos on one of the most innovative songs in jazz history, “The Drum Thing.” His haunting saxophone melody takes second stage to frenzied drumming, similar to everything from a drum roll of a marching band to a child’s simple banging on pots and pans. The only constant throughout the course of the seven minute experimental jam session is the simple, persistent bass.
Not all jazz songs are neat, soothing, and perfected. “The Drum Thing” is jarring and quite unexpected, yet beautiful in its flawed execution.
