“Alabama’s Aces…”

01.14.10 Written by J. Tinsley

You know what’s funny? This time last year “Drop,” uh, dropped and I knew it would go on to be Rich Boy’s next big single. A&R fail on my part. Fast forward a quick 365 and we find ourselves in the same spot with Rich Boy toting another hard hitting single, “Go Crazy.” This time Polow is replaced with Jim Jonsin (who’s probably still spending checks off “Whatever You Like” and “Lollipop“). Also, fellow ‘Bama native YelaWolf checks in for a guest verse only he can pull off. Word of advice: play this on some real speakers. The computer won’t cut it. Read the rest of this entry »

“Next To You” – Review Of Mike Jones’ The Voice

05.11.09 Written by MZ

Back in 2005, Mike Jones was the talk of the Houston mainstream rap scene. Riding high with “Still Tippin’” & “Back Then” off his debut album Who Is Mike Jones? to double platinum sales, he was one of the few to capitalize off the city’s moment in the spotlight. Relying on savvy marketing (281-330-8004 is unforgettable) and an infallible grind, he was able to overcome his lyrical inadequacies to become a household name. Four years later, after several singles that failed to connect and shelved album/movie (The American Dream), Mike Jones is finally back with his sophomore album (and new phone number) The Voice. Although we know who Mike Jones is, the question is in the wake of this overly sexed release, is he the voice of the streets or the sheets? Read the rest of this entry »

“On & On” – Review Of Mims’ Guilt

04.11.09 Written by TC

If you ask the average Hip-Hop fan who Mims is, they’ll merely tell you the “This Is Why I’m Hot” star is your typical one-hit wonder. Ask Shawn Mims the same and he’ll tell you he’s a hungry rapper from NYC who just happens to have a hit. Still, no one can disagree that his rington-ed entrance wasn’t the most reputable of first impressions, even Mims himself. Which is probably why he decided to name his latest LP Guilt for the remorse he feels due to his success. But it’s not the spoils of success he should feel guilty from this time around. It’s his bland persona and forgettable track selection that should take the bulk of the blame for this sophomoric slump.

Guilt isn’t without it’s bright spots however, as Mims does manage to at least lick the creative envelope once or twice throughout. Jim Jonsin’s enigmatic sonic creation sets the template Read the rest of this entry »

“The Jim Jonsin’ Collection…”

03.26.09 Written by Gotty™

I’ve been applauding this guy’s work for a minute. You want a hit? You go to Jim Jonsin’.

But his work & sound go back further than his current reign over radio & dates back to his early career when he was DJ Jealous J on the Miami bass scene. Uggh…Nice Watch put together a well-rounded collection of songs that Jim either produced, wrote and/or performed. If you look @ the songs listed, the first thing you’ll notice is how many of the songs you know without thinking twice. After that, the amount of diversity in sounds should be evident, because none of these sound identical…but majority have left their mark either commercially or in rap music’s history.

Tracklisting & link after the break. Read the rest of this entry »
