Hip-hop is old.
Older than my 17-plus years of listening. Old enough that the length of time I’ve had Hip-Hop in my life comprises only half of Hip-hop’s birthright. There’s a lot that’s happened between that seminal moment Kool Herc fucked around with some wires and speakers, and 2008, the year of Autotune.
I think it’s fair to say Hip-Hop fans have lost touch with the movement’s original meaning. Part of that is the fault of music media, its focus on the lowest common denominator and how that has seeped into the art and culture. Part of this is natural evolution: a movement or cultural phenomenon will change over time, as all things do on this earth. Read the rest of this entry »
