Turn Your Swag On…

“Hopped up out the bed, turn my swagggg oonnnnn/Took a look in the mirror said ‘what’s up’”

I don’t care what you say you mun-kees © Rawse.

But if Soulja Boy can find beats like this in between making YouTube vids & participating in beefs with all challengers, why in the bloody name of all things holy can’t artists like Nas and all others affected by with QB Syndrome find production like this? Sure, Natural Disaster and Antonio Top Cat are unheard of, but if young Deandre can find them, why can’t Budden, Ortiz, etc.?

Say what you will about SB’s content, lyrical abilities…hell, his whole artistic persona. But knowing that a major factor in the success of a song lies in the beat, I would say he’s doing one thing right, which leads to the other thing he’s doing correctly: making hits.

This post is brought to you after a recent witnessing of “Turn My Swag On” come through the speakers @ two separate parties and the crowd losing it, literally. Whether they had it to begin with is totally arguable but beside the point @ this juncture.

Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em – “Soulja Boy Tellem” Video

I’m doing interviews and ‘dressin’ all these critics/tryna underrate me/sayin’ I ain’t got no lyrics

No need to take our word for it. The people do have ears Mr. Tell ‘Em. This is track #14 on your freshly minted brick, so attempts of disassociating it from the album are only futile at this point.

Unbeknownst to most of the public however, there was a video he posted from his YouTube channel where he took back his stance on being a role model with a series of curse words and goo-goo ga-ga’s. It lasted a whooping 20 minutes but the impact it made is everlasting.

Ringtone Rap is on it’s way out the door. Read the rest of this entry »

“Turn My Swag Off” – Review Of Souljah Boy Tell ‘Em’s iSouljaBoyTellEm

For Bigga

Soulja Boy just may be the only rapper to ever have the luxury of sitting atop the love and hate mountains at the same time. On one hand, Mr. Tell ‘Em is the sole creator of “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” the biggest selling digital download of all time– while on the other, he simultaneously holds rank as the ultimate scapegoat for the decline of musical innovation. Naturally, looking for lyrical fulfilment from a Soulja Boy record is like seeking wifey in a strip club, but even as a party rapper, SB still misses his mark continuously with moronic songs that dive pass the safe haven of “fun” into “slacker” territory.

Which is where his sophomore effort iSouljaBoyTellEm slumps beyond the typical juve-pseudo bullshit and into an aimless wad of irksome synthesizers, lowbrow lyricism, and fart jokes. The initial period of accepting him as rapper/hitmaker has passed. It’s time to actually make hits. And the harsh reality of the matter is, Soulja Boy isn’t doing anything that the average individual with a microphone from Radio Shack® and a bag of Skittles® can’t accomplish. Absurdity such as “Bird Walk” and “Turn My Swag On” sound like they were derived from impromptu studio sessions where goofing off was the theme. Read the rest of this entry »
