Notable Quotable – Jay Electronica & J. Cole On “Just Begun”

“Smile on my face, tears of a sad clown
Feelin’ out of place as I whistle a cab down
If I tip extra, can I huff a cig?
Blow my smoke out the window, droppin’ ashes on the bridge
I’m in New York now, like Akeem and Semi was
Tryna get the lobby door open from a semi buzz
I just wanna go to the slum
And throw my money on the floor like The Notorious B.U.M.
Build a home, teach a class, start a revolution
Free the mind, heal the body, talkin’ evolution
This that black Elohim Anunnaki rap
That Farrakhan-Akeem-Olajuwon-Qaddafi rap
I dedicate this to my niggas in New Orleans
Rockin’ black and gold stocking caps and fleur-de-lis Shockey hats
I’m in the coatroom, screaming ‘Who Dat’ on the double
Servin’ gumbo wit’ a shovel, dog, I’m on another level
Me and Kweli come together like two, pieces of metal
We magnetizin’ the ghetto…”

j-cole1

“…Now here’s the memo
I’ma rebel without a cause, a bezzle without no flaws
And shawty you straight but you look way better without no drawers
And sweat out this alcohol Bet I’ma about to ball,
And never let up look how I just crept up without applause
Fed up with all the frauds and left y’all without a job
The center of attention, this is clever, I’m Pau Gasol
Really though I’m LeBron, really don’t got my mind
On this new school of rappers, I will really go Columbine
And throw up the diamond sign
Boy you know I’ma shine
Flow is in Ramadan
Cuz couple years ago, the game had they pajamas on
But now they on my dick–man, I should throw a condom on
Ay, cuz a nigga cummin’ raw like I ain’t got one on
And I ain’t stoppin’ or coppin’ no pleas, I just lock and load squeeze
Dog, I’m on a higher level, I’m on top of nosebleeds
Niggas say they sick, but when they write, they don’t sneeze
Like the nigga on the block wavin’ his glock but won’t squeeze
…please”

Jay Electronica & J. Cole on “Just Begun” from the album Revolutions Per Minute

Yeah, the Black Star keeps shining right on home but there’s a couple of new bright spots in orbit looking to dominate the galaxy. Jay-Z already told you a star was born with J. Cole and he ensures Jiggaman isn’t a liar with yet another verse to put the rewind button out of order. Not before Jay “Drops Material Like Halley’s Comet” Electronica set up a pretty lofty volley of his own. Betcha didn’t know the New Orleans Saints’ logo was formally named a fleur-de-lis. Good googly moogly, that’s some intelligent lyricism.

Which one can only hope returns to the center stage. Reflection Eternal is back for 2K10 and Kweli especially, knows a thing or two about assembling proper posse cuts.

Reflection Eternal – “Back Again”

04.30.09 Written by K1NG

It’s been nearly a decade since Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek came together for their debut album Train Of Thought as Reflection Eternal. The two have both been very busy separately but haven’t dropped anything official as a duo since, aside from an underwhelming collaboration with Bootsy Collins called “Internet Connection.” But today, they released what seems as their official comeback song entitled “Back Again,” the first leak off their upcoming album Revolutions Per Min.

Hi-Tek’s beat is a mesh of tribal drums and grunts with a tight bass line Read the rest of this entry »

“My Wiz Play The Flute”

04.25.09 Written by TSSCrew

Words by Jesse H.

I don’t know the reason, but nearly every Hip-Hop track I’ve heard that utilizes the flute is phenomenal. It’s an interesting strand, but it makes sense. While it certainly isn’t the manliest of instruments, hearing a flute on the track says something about the producer; that they have searched for creative samples which expand their musical palette beyond the standard drum kit/bass/synth combo. Here’s five flute-flecked Hip-Hop highlights:

Nas- “Nas Is Like” (Prod. by DJ Premier) — Obviously, a stone cold Five Cig flute standard. The flute brings to mind an image of gliding across the top of a jungle canopy, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-style. Near the top of the laundry list of Premier’s greatest beats.

Ghostface Killer – “The Forest” (Prod. by The Alchemist) — The most dynamic flute sample on this list, the fluttering whistle of the flutes is a perfect contrast to Read the rest of this entry »

“The Blast!”

09.20.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Malik V.

Two hour train rides aren’t my idea of a party, but that’s what I gotta do to go back home to visit the fam. These journeys do have a positive side, though. They give me time to explore the often neglected areas of my iPod, which haven’t been scrolled down for quite some time. This particular trip allowed me to discover a gem, which I will not forget for a while. Read the rest of this entry »

Re-Defining The Quotable…

08.05.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Jason H.

Although audacious of me to state – late ’90s underground would not be what it was if Biggie Smalls were alive. The decadent period of Versace button downs and tales of the good life were all well and good, especially when Christopher Wallace did it so convincingly. But copy-cats however, brewed up a cloud so thick of fraud that the whole style was tainted. Although the trend continued and many fans were duped riding on champagne wishes, Biggie’s death ushered in a lane for the same talent without the aura of superstar bullshit. While B.I.G. earned his spot, imitators didn’t and when the wave of “underground” emcees came in full force, it was like the can of air that Mel Brooks inhaled in Space Balls. It was a breath of fresh air defined.

“We played against each other like puppets, swearing you got pull
when the only pull you got is the wool over your eyes
Getting knowledge in jail like a blessing in disguise”
- Talib Kweli off of “Respiration”

“The deadly ritual seems immersed, in the perverse
Full of short attention spans, short tempers, and short skirts
Long barrel automatics released in short bursts
The length of black life is treated with short worth.”
- Mos Def off of “Thieves In The Night”
