If you want something done right, you’re probably better off doing it yourself. The first time I came across Killa Kyleon was during my wonder years at Hampton University – freshman year if I’m not mistaken. My patna from Houston always played Texas Hip-Hop in his dorm room while we played Madden (when I actually played the game). It was through Slim Thug I became familiar with Killa Kyleon and his music.
Fast forward several years and Killa is out for self. For reasons unknown to me (not that they are my business anyway), Double K is no longer affiliated with Slim Thugga or the Boss Hogg Outlawz. Instead, he is his own boss now as the head of his Authintik Music Group (AMG) imprint and even stumbled upon his own “Gangsta Grillz,” titled Natural Born Killa.
One of the standout records is his collaborative effort with Young Money’s own Gudda Gudda on “Hold Up.” The in-studio visual features the two puffing Mary Jane and drinking out of the now infamous Styrofoam cup while rhyming over a bouncy instrumental. Gudda bats lead off with a catchy offering setting the stage for Killa to drive the record home. It won’t put you in deep thought about the future of society, but will ultimately sound great on a real sound system.

The next step could be foreseen by the blindfolded: the Cash Money junioraires assemble to release an average compilation to capitalize on their current omnipresence.We Are Young Money, a platform to launch the careers of lesser known acts such as T-Streets, Lil’ Chuckee & Twist, doesn’t quite meet its goal with musical significance that’s less than stellar. Young Money is an Army–better yet a Navy, flooding the streets with their product as long as the streets are saying they’re hot. This December 21st, they’re out for that Christmas ca$h with their clique album We Are Young Money which includes this jingle “Bedrock”: the soundtrack to every teenybopper’s next formal dance.
Typically, a mixtape receives loads of preliminary buzz before its release and then it drifts into the ethers to be forgotten and lost on hard drives, never discussed again. But what Dwayne Carter did on No Ceilings deserves a slight bit of recognition.
