Cee-Lo Green Returns To Rap, Promises New Goodie Mob & Gnarls Barkley Albums

06.26.11 Written by Gotty™

Watching Cee-Lo’s stock continuing to rise as a judge of The Voice, I thought we’d lost another rapper to other interests. However, the do-everything-guy recently told The Source that he has full intentions of rapping again and that a new Goodie album is in the works. Green shared that both it and a Gnarls Barkley LP are on the horizon but he would be “completing a Goodie Mob album first.” When asked if he missed rapping, he replied “Yeah I actually I really do…Goodie Mob is here to stay and so is Hip Hop. And we as a community need help, and I’m apart of the community, so I believe doing another Goodie Mob Album is doing a civil service, if you will.”

Now, if only another famed Atlanta MC would do his Hip-Hop civic duty.

TSS Presents Smoking Sessions With Playboy Tre

As you saw, Bobby Ray brought his show to Chicago last week. This, of course means that my homie and fellow Outkast aficionado, Playboy Tre was in attendance. I was able to pull him to the side and talk about his new projects, the resurgence of “real” Hip-Hop and his own definition of the word “ham.” He also opened up about how important the Goodie Mob reunion was to himself and Atlanta as a whole and the reason one absence from the show left a sour taste in his mouth.

“Decisions, Decisions”

After reviewing Soul Assassin’s new joint, Intermission, for URB and sharing a gem with you, the loyal readers of The Smoking Section (have you copped your TSS shirt?) I dug into my collection of Muggs collabos, which were gathering dust on my hard drive and found a joint effort with the Cali beat maker and a group of native ATLien rappers.

Wedged somewhere between RZA and Dr. Dre’s tracks you’ll find a highly overlooked guest shot from The Dungeon’s own Goodie Mob. I never thought Read the rest of this entry »

“All They Do Is This…”

The remaining members of Goodie Mob were dead wrong for signing off on this promo pic during the One Monkey… days. But goddamn that shit is hilarious to me right now. I was kinda shocked when my consigliere had never heard “They Don’t Dance No Mo’.” Remember the video where they were knuckin’ around, mimicking club patrons? Yeah, I still do that dance now. And I couldn’t find that fuckin video no matter how hard I tried. Read the rest of this entry »

“Still Standing” – The Goodie Mob Reunion

08.21.08 Written by Gotty™

Mo’G spoke on it first before this footage surfaced.

In our current state of affairs, not only as a Hip-Hop nation but a nation of millions, the “I” often overtakes the “we.” At this point, it almost seems to be more natural to think of self instead of community and it’s reflected in our music’s lyrics – filled with bragging & boasting of material accumulation mixed with self-preservation. 100 To 3

100 to 3

What better way for The Source to ring in ’98 with their 100th issue? With LL on the cover holding five golden Mics, the house that Mays & Benzino built was living the life as the industry standard when it came to magazines. Looking back on their 9-plus years covering the music we all enjoy, they provided top 100 lists for the best singles, albums, covers, athletes, etc as they not only celebrated their existence but the culture as well. This was evident in all of the congratulations from labels and artists in the advertising. Not satisfied to just recollect on the past, The Source also looked to the future technology would play in regards to the music and how its influences were making the music a global phenomenon. “A Healin’ To Remember…” – Witchdoctor’s A S.W.AT. Healin’ Ritual

08.07.08 Written by TC

Gotty knew as well as I did…

Witchdoctor is the most forgotten member of the Dungeon Family. Which probably makes his debut disc A S.W.AT. Healin’ Ritual a physical piece of amnesia.

Call it bad timing. With DF brethren Outkast delivering an album that defied the laws of nature as well Goodie Mob handing out seconds of soulful foodfor thought, ATL had selected its all-star lineup to represent for ‘98. Read the rest of this entry »

The Ni##a Experience…

08.03.08 Written by TC

Is it a safe assumption that Cee-Lo was more persuasive in getting his ethnic points across in one verse than Nas was in an entire album?

Better believe that Slick…

In what was possibly the most responsible abuse of the word “nigga” ever witnessed in a song, (Lo dropped approximately 30 N-bombs in under 3 minutes), the prelude for Goodie Mo-B’s sophomore stride served not only as an immediate attention grabber, but as an internal analysis of one of the most controversial words this world has ever encountered. “Man, What Up With All These Questions?”

05.23.08 Written by Gotty™

We’re always talking about memorable moments in the history of this rap thing. One of the most memorable first appearances that’s rarely mentioned…

Outkast Featuring Goodie Mob – Git Up, Git Out

Cee-Lo’s verse.

Before he was singin’ with Danger Mouse, he was an integral & one of the more anticipated voices in the Dungeon Family. And with his bars on this one, he covered the disgruntled frustration that many teens and young adults feel as they go through life’s transitions. Please note that I didn’t section it off by race. All teens could relate & specifically remember my white dudes jammin’ to this song & noddin too, albeit not always on time.

Shoutouts to Cee-Lo Goodie. Thanks for gettin it in with this verse & blessing us with what’s been a memorable career.
