Yesterday’s inbox deliveries included a specially packaged, Matrix-like red or blue pill parcel with Mr. Forte’s name stamped on two tracks and they’re both distinctly different but enjoyable. “King Tut” swipes Swizz’s song title and N.E.R.D.’s “God Bless Us All” big beat and it’s all braggadocious ‘Bere exercising his commanding voice over the blaring bassline. The name “Forte’” does not bode well with me. As a North Carolina supporter (who is still in rehab from last season’s sh*t show), Joseph Forte’ is not on my list of favorite people. With that in mind, Gilbere Forte’ was already in the red in my book over something he had no control over whatsoever. Ignorant? Of course it is, but sports doesn’t require you to think logically. Up until this weekend, I had yet to listen to dude. I passed on Gotty’s TSS introduction and TC’s liberation of his debut project 87 Dreams. Thankfully, I came around.
What I learned during my listening session is that Forte’ embodies the energy and aggression associated with most acts from The City of Brotherly Love. His flow, however, does seem different. That’s a good thing. Cassidy hasn’t been relevant in awhile. Beans still has me shaking my head. And it’s a damn shame people didn’t appreciate that Freeway and Jake One project to the extent it should have. New blood is never a bad thing and ensures the city’s lifeline to the genre is still productive. Forte’ represents that.
Thanks to the good people at DJBooth.net (whose co-sign holds weight in my book), Forte’s newest track is here to analyze. His “Buttons Freestyle” (co-produced with Raak) showcases that same agressive flow. It also embelishes that same “underdog” mentality us Hip-Hoppers love from someone chasing a dream wondering if this is their life calling or simply a hobby with legs. With an ominous sample as the co-star, G.F. genuinely finds his groove on the second verse with lines like “A legend in my own mind/Sh!ttin’ out gold mines/Treasuring my d!ck, so my piss gone shine.”
I’m still working towards my full co-sign towards the guy, but I am liking what has been afforded to me thus far. Rome wasn’t built in a day and I’m willing to continue listening as long as homie keeps grinding.
Filthy Rich Barbershop’s tent was set up far back behind the courts, adding a full-on urban touch to Nike’s takeover of Rucker Park for last week’s WBF. Weird as well but I guess to me only because their barbers stayed busy with clippers abuzz for the duration of the Festival.
You know you composed something special when you have not one but two release parties for you debut project. Hop, skipping and jumping from New York to Philly like the Sixers were slaying the Knicks, Gilbere Forte’ celebrated every last of his 87 Dreams in style. Read the rest of this entry »
