Night Of The Living Dance

10.12.10 Written by Beware

Despite my budget trying to sway me otherwise, I plan on spending my Halloween getting sloshed with Chromeo X A-Trak X Theophilus London, for what my Chi-Town brethren says shall be the hottest concert in the land come October’s end. I expect to see all my Midwesterners there, pretending they can dance right along side me. Since it is Halloween, would it be ironic if we went as hipsters?

Oh yeah, and are you Business Casual yet, or do you still dress like a dork?

Event Recap: Chiddy Bangs’ Swelly Tour Hits The D

08.12.10 Written by Beware

Not every act can start off on a stadium tour. In order to achieve Madison Square Garden love the initial grind of hitting dimly-lit, small to medium-sized clubs, taking some fan photos and shaking some sweaty hands is a must. Such was the case this past Saturday night as the kids from Chiddy Bang brought their Swelly Tour to the basement of Detroit’s famed St. Andrews Hall. Read the rest of this entry »

Event Recap: Chromeo @ Detroit’s Majestic Theatre

08.09.10 Written by Beware

Firsts are always the best. That first kiss. The first time witnessing the team you grew up watching, finally hoisting their golden hardware. Your first hit from the…higher power. And, of course, your first glimpse of your favorite group performing live, which is why my presence last Thursday at Chromeo’s first concert in my native Motor City was one for the ages. Coming To A Venue Near You

06.13.10 Written by Beware

If you happen to see one of these banners at a venue this summer, you’re probably headed in the right direction. For this prized piece of propaganda is proud representation of the residence of Respected Fresh and, if it so happens to gloriously grace those shaking walls at your next show, you are undeniably worthy of our support network of conscious music/life aficionados. We call it how we see it, applauding and attesting evenly, with the same honesty we expect from our artists.

If you don’t see one, we either ran out of gas money or you need to work harder.

Video: Curren$y @PhatKaps

04.30.10 Written by Gotty™

I’ve had Lemony Snicket’s Series Of Unfortunate Events one after another since last Friday, slowing down the processing time that would normally be associated with a show recap. I’m talking car accidents and death (separate incidents), then dealing with the fallout from from both. Still, the footage of Spitta’s performance @ PhatKaps deserved its space and shine, instead of drifting away into the depths of YouTube. And since the internet don’t stop, neither shall I. Video: Curren$y Performs “16 Switches”

04.24.10 Written by Gotty™

Curren$y hit the city the other night and we all had a great time, hanging out to watch him perform. More than music, it was a mix of comedic stage routine, highlighted by complete interaction between artist and crowd in the intimate setting provided by PhatKaps. Having seen Spitta live @ least six or seven times over the past year or so, I can honestly say that his stage show never gets old because it’s predicated off the crowd. No matter what, he always finds a way to engage them, bringing them aboard as his Jets’ co-pilots wherever he’s performing. Read the rest of this entry »

Event: Curren$y Performing @ PhatKaps In Nashville

04.15.10 Written by Gotty™

Just like with mixtapes and co-signing artists, I think we turn down more events than we actually sign on to sponsor. However, when I saw this one, it was a no-brainer to throw our support behind it. PhatKaps, one of the best and longest-standing boutiques in the region, tapped Curren$y to come take the stage & perform for a set here in Nashville. Annnd, the young homie Dee Goodz will be taking the stage as well so the hometown crowd will be represented well. Check the flyer below for the full dets but go ahead and clear off next Thursday evening. Swing by PK’s early to get an outfit, see your weedman in advance, the whole nine yards. DJ Skee Presents Skeetox

04.01.10 Written by Gotty™

L.A. Live music. $15 cover. And if I know the homie Skee’s pedigree like I know I do, the shindig will have it’s share of sundresses and stilettos in attendance.

“The launch of Skeetox, DJ Skee’s innovative new live stage show that has been in the works for 6 months featuring a 7 piece live band remixing and creating live music underneath vocals backed with a full LED light wall and visual stage show to match. The performance also features special appearances from several artists including Mike Posner, Cisco Adler, Ya Boy (performing “We Run LA”), plus other artists so big we can’t even say the names (think of long time Skee collaborators).” Read the rest of this entry »

Donwill Recaps The Audible Treats SXSW Showcase

03.31.10 Written by Gotty™

We like the Tanya Morgan guys. On the exterior, they’re “Hardcore Gentlemen” who rap quite well and are cool as cucumbers as individuals. If you’ve been around long enough, you know that we once had Von Pea as an honorary guest for one of our Crew Love roundtable sessions many moons ago. And the team @ Audible Treats are always a delight to work with because they align themselves with authentic acts. So, when they pitched the idea of letting on of the performers from their inaugural SXSW showcase recap the event, it seemed brilliant…a brilliant way to escape work. Even more, it just helps to reiterate what type of energy that Hip-Hop brings to the festival, both for fans and performers. So, allow me to pass the mic keyboard to Donwill and let him take it from here. Read the rest of this entry »

Video: Freddie Gibbs Performs “The Ghetto” At Highline Ballroom

02.04.10 Written by Devin Chanda

In this second part of a documentary short covering Gibbs’ first headlining set here in NYC, he debuts “The Ghetto.” The track jacks the beat from Big L’s “7 Minute Freestyle,” a classic cut which helped to build the legends of both L and a pre-Hov Jay. Afterwards, Freddie candidly reflects on his evening and the past year, one in which his profile has risen tremendously and will continue to in the coming months. So, take a glimpse at what we’ve captured here for you—the beginning stages of something special.

The 808 Experience: SMKA’s 808…Vol. 2 Release Party Recap

01.27.10 Written by Gotty™

808 Experience: Vol 2 Release Party “The Recap” from The Smoking Section on Vimeo.

We’ll be putting up footage from some of the individual performances later on this week but we wanted to get this footage out there to help recap what was already a wonderful experience as a whole. From the behind the scenes manuvering, the cooperative spirit displayed by all of the artists involved, the hitch-free & energetic event…and an excellent piece of music,The 808 Experiment: Vol 2, to boot.

“On Jan 22, 2010, Atlanta celebrated the release of SMKA’s The 808 Experiment: Vol 2. From 6-9pm artists, fans and media packed in WISH for interviews, a photo shoot and free copy of The 808 Experiment: Vol 2. Then everyone migrated next door to the Star Bar for a night of cheap drinks and great performances. The venue was at capacity all night long with a 30 minute line topping 50 people waiting to get in. DJ Sol Messiah and Terry Urban played musical DJs throughout the night and keep the party going till 3am. However, the highlights of the night were the unbelievable performances put on by the artists. There were 13 performances including Nappy Roots, Yelawolf, FKi, Tom P, Hollyweerd, Aleon Craft, Grip Plyaz… and a special surprise performance from Pill. All the artists performed their song off the 808 Experiment: Vol 2, with a few surprises thrown in the mix. The night was capped off by an improvised set by Terry Urban, Alien the Drummer and Parker Smith on guitar. We had an amazingly talented band behind the artists, which resulted in one of the best hip-hop shows the city of Atlanta has ever seen. If you don’t believe me, ask someone who was there.” [SMKA]

Respect to everyone involved. Extra shoutout to SMKA for being instrumental in helping to hold down Atlanta musically. And the footage was shot by The SP Agency. Get to know the name now.

Event Reminder: Freddie Gibbs x Mickey Factz @ The Highline Ballroom

01.14.10 Written by Devin Chanda

The last solo set delivered by Freddie Gibbs on a New York City stage was rudely cut short. Apparently, sparking an L while rockin’ the mic is a no-go downtown at SOBs. Hopefully (if Freddie hasn’t learned his lesson), the rules will be different some 20 blocks north at the Highline Ballroom. Come next Tuesday, Gangsta Gibbs will headline his first NYC show, with the likes of hometown head and consummate showman Mickey Factz, in addition to Das Racist, also set to hit the stage.
