When Slim Shady returned from a prescription-pill-induced absence back in May of 2009, the Hip-Hop world welcomed the always outspoken icon back with open arms. Then, when he donned the infamous accent and proceeded to bludgeon his way back into people’s hearts with Relapse, those same folk slowly retracted their steps and then sprinted the other way. Everybody’s from somewhere and rappers, more than artists in any other genre, always seem to be the first to big up their cities on wax. No matter the state, country or ward they were birthed, MCs can’t help but put on for their area code. Read the rest of this entry »
His last solo album has scanned nearly six million copies and his most recent output, Hell: The Sequel, with Royce Da 5’9″, is well over gold in sales. Suffice to say, Eminem isn’t losing sleep over whether or not he can afford cable in every room. And with such financial security, he can also afford to do as he pleases. Including turning down $6 million dollars in guaranteed money to simply perform as he’s been doing to promote his releases. Read the rest of this entry »
“Talk To Me” is arguably the last big-feature leak we’ll hear from Thug Motivation 103: Hustlerz Ambition before the album hits stores on December 20th. We usually do all the jibbering and jabbering about what we hear but I want to ask the peanut gallery a question: Read the rest of this entry »
The term “epic” is throw around almost as freely as “classic” when it comes to rap and pop culture as a whole. But the word makes for the appropriate billing here as B.o.B releases his latest mixtape, EPIC (Every Play Is Crucial). For a freebie, the tracklisting packs a lot of star power, including Grand Hustle boss T.I., other high profile inclusions like Eminem, Weezy and Mos Def. Read the rest of this entry »
While writing about Obie Trice’s “There They Go,” a few different angles came to mind. First, the Slim Shady-produced cut is from Trice’s sophomore effort, Second Round’s On Me, which is an extremely slept-on album that still doesn’t get the due such a well-rounded LP should. Upon reading the listed artists, Yelawolf’s “Throw It Up” may seem like the oddest pairing on a rap record but it’s actually not. His Tennessee roots mean he undoubtedly listened to more than his fair share of “the old Triple 6 Mafia” when the group still featured Gangsta Boo and other originals. Still, the last time I heard anything about Boo she had robbed a Dollar General and/or had found Jesus. Read the rest of this entry »
The 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards happened last night but nobody cared. Rappers, chains and shoutouts pretty much sum up what we can assume happened without even putting ourselves through the torture. The prime reason anyone tunes into the show is to catch the cyphers and, thankfully, the Internet makes it so we can catch those without ever having subjecting ourselves to the rest of f*ckery. A sharp contrast to the “Writer’s Block” disco inferno, Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters” glows to a much more subtle flame. Created for the sole purpose of letting the people know Hell: The Sequel was in stores, Bruno Mars sings his little heart out as Royce sends a kite from prison and Eminem trots the globe from the outside looking in. It’s been a minute since its release, but Royce is still stuck on the same stanza, frustrated with reality. With Eminem yelling in the background for motivation, the volcano erupts and all the pent up anger is released in a fiery display of lyrical dominance. There’s a clear cut reasoning for the madness, however. Read the rest of this entry »
On Sunday night, I went to bed feeling pretty smug after a successful weekend of eBaying old crap from my closet paired with a weird, but welcome influx of Karmaloop sales boosting my account there. But my come-up felt minor once I heard Eminem reportedly made $3 million for a weekend’s work at the V Festival in England. Read the rest of this entry »
In this day and age of co-signs and alliances…oh wait, I already said that today. It just seems like more and more musicians turned moguls are relying on publicity opposed to pushing the music to the people and allowing it to make a gradual impact in their lives. Read the rest of this entry »
The Bad Meets Evil union call upon the living legend himself, DJ Premier to give Success Is Certain’s first leak a last hurrah before the album drops. Consider it a traditional remix in the sense (remember those?) as only the beat gets a makeover this go ’round. Throw it at the end of your tracklist when you grab the album from iTunes.
