Eli Porter Totally Redeems Himself On “Tosh.0″

09.23.11 Written by Beware

Most of the time Daniel Tosh’s infamous “Web Redemptions” deal with someone trying to get back at one person. Yet, for Tosh.0′s live season premiere this week from Arizona State University, the focus of said YouTube payback was an entire nation. After a high school freestyle battle brought ridicule into Eli Porter’s world more than three years ago, the out there ATLien was given a chance to grandiosely preform in front of thousands Read the rest of this entry »

“U Don’t Like…” Eli Porter, Lil Jon & Diplo?

09.07.10 Written by Gotty™

I don’t think Lil Jon & Diplo had any direct relationship with this, as it seems Eli & co. simply slapped a garbled verse onto Diplo’s original. But don’t Lil Jon & Eli sound weirdly fluid together, like a collaboration that’s a perfect match that someone dreamed up as soon as Eli hit the scene? Read the rest of this entry »

Over seven years ago, rap’s William Hung & his cohorts became Internet phenomenons with the now infamous Iron Mic battle clip that swept across YouTube. Filmed while they were only high school students, the friends reached a pinnacle so high, so early that I’m guessing it has been hard to top. Prom p#ssy? Graduating high school? 20 Signs That Rap Blogs Are Your Reality

06.24.09 Written by TSSCrew

Words By S. Cadet

It’s no secret that we all love music but there’s such a thing as having too much of one thing. I’m not one to talk because my internet browsing sphere is extremely limited outside of rap blogs/sites. I mean I live on the edge sometimes. I check my mail, read the news, catch up on sports and get my geek on with Engadget and Joystiq. Still rap takes a huge chunk out of my site rotation and it’s pretty sad.

So ladies and gentlemen, here’s a list of symptoms that plague regular rap blog readers. Keep in mind that these are in no particular order and if many apply you need to log the hell off and get a new hobby or something. Here we go.

1. Your punch lines are copyrighted from public figures/celebrities.

2. Jojo @ 1:50 is seared into your brain.

3. You know that “TIs” can’t be confused your favorite incarcerated rapper.

4. You hate on Bol Crawford but you read his work every day.

5. Eli Porter and T Baby are in your top ten DOA based off of comedy alone… Read the rest of this entry »

So Who REALLY Had The Best Year Ever?

01.01.09 Written by MZ

2008 was an interesting year to say the least, and like in every aspect of life, some people have better years than others. Everyone can’t be like T.I. and have a banner year, after being knocked by the Feds. Or Lil’ Wayne for that matter, who went on the sell a million albums in a week, after being caught in the desert with way too many drugs ( I know he was gonna “sell” them to cacti & coyotes). So let’s look back on some people who had the best year ever. Not best meaning good, but best meaning bad… ya dig?

DMX

Earl Simmons was on a mission this year: see how many times he could get arrested and released. He was at 5 by July, but he kept going like a “grand” champ. He branched out and dabbled in false identity, to go along with drug charges and animal cruelty. He was caught on tape cussing out a judge during sentencing, then later on caught hiding out in Scott Storch’s mansion while on the run from Arizona authorities. All this while he was supposed to working on a gospel album. I guess he’s still waiting on a sign, although I blame BET for this because they didn’t renew his reality show. Oh yeah, he ended up on 8 arrests for the year if you were wondering. Read the rest of this entry »

“One On One”

09.04.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By David D.

I stumbled upon the “Stylin’ On You” video the other day on Youtube and was reminded how much I used to love watching freestyle battles before that classic moment in goon history essentially ruined it for me. But for a time, I was on YouTube non-stop checking for these battles as they are good showcases in punchline rap. Although in order to fully enjoy these contests you gotta understand a few points:

1) These cats aren’t freestyling. These are mostly old, rehearsed bars with the opponent’s name inserted whenever the rapper has a little extra space. And if the battle’s been scheduled for a long time, chances are that the opponent-specific bars were rehearsed and planned days in advance as well.

2) The more famous rapper is at the disadvantage. If I battled Lil’ Wayne, I’d have tons of funny things to say cuz I know so much about his life. Wayne doesn’t know anything about me and has substantially less material to go on.

3) Ignore the crowd reactions. I don’t know how these signed guys have such a large posse, but they do- and each posse member has to show up for the battle. You can tell by watching because they’re the guys screaming at the top of their lungs as if “you’re ugly” is the hottest punchline ever.

Now that you know the rules, enjoy some memorable face-to-face battles.

Cassidy vs. Freeway Part 1 Part 2

This one wasn’t fair from the start. Freeway isn’t a battle rapper and rarely has any punchlines- plus his strength is dependent upon his ability to ride a beat. So an acapella battle with Cassidy resulted in one of the most one-sided ass whoopin’s in Hip-Hop history. This video launched Cassidy’s legend and was the precursor to a lot of the Smack DVD battles that would flood barbershops across the hood. Read the rest of this entry »
