Any DJ Quik diehard will tell you their favorite permed-out producer/rapper is better with his one-time protege Suga Free than without, and vice versa. It’s in the handbook you get once you’ve purchased Balance & Options more than five times. From Rhythmalism to Street Gospel, Balance & Options to The New Testament, these two interwove their previous pimpology to create a chemistry and flyness one in their own, churning out classic material together for close to a decade. Then came the un/expected tipping point, where personal problems split the two down the middle and sent them on their own, separate and unequal endeavors. Free coasted on his associations for a while, remaining independent, while putting a few hot records along the way. Quik, on the other hand, released maybe two of his most mainstream records to date and gained little to no ground as a result. Last a more than casual listener had heard, shots were even fired. Too often do we sift through the predictable media cycle of artists yelling how “crazy” their album is or even fixing their lying ass mouths to utter the other “C” word — classic. So, I think my mans shot me a link to new music from DJ Quik’s cousin or Battlecat’s little brother, because I don’t know who the hell Dam-Funk is but his music is on some straight-out-of-Cali-hydroponic-lo-fi-funk type shit.
