Every few days, our favorite prolific intergalactic hero DâM-FunK will release a new track directly to his fans via Twitter. It’s timing thing, sort of like catching a solar eclipse. Last night, it was an unreleased track labeled “IHopeUKnowImWatchingJune,” full of deep grooving bass, synths and a slightly muffled aura to it that reminds the ears that this is funk, not pop. In the morning equivalent of being allowed to indulge in French toast and a big bowl of sugary sweet cereal, Theophilus serves up “Accept The New.” The song, which will be included on his upcoming I Want You mixtape, finds Mr. London remixing the work of another creative genius (Dãm-Funk’s “Fantasy”). Our pals over at Stones Throw tossed this dose of Dam Funk into the inbox yesterday. This time to the beat of…well…tell ‘em Peanut Butter Wolf.

Dam and I went to a studio last night and recorded an acoustic piano version of “Steppin Into My Life” and filmed the whole process live. Just Dam, an acoustic piano, 2 mics and a candle in a room surrounded by red velvet curtains – in time for Valentine’s Day.

And that’s it. A classical jam session with retro camera work. Perfect. Unlike the mellow funkiness of the OG (below), this Valentines Day recreation sounds like something you’d catch on PBS late night – blown out – and be super satisfied with just zoning to it for the next 45 minutes.

Stones Throw’s latest podcast features a few of the label’s brightest minds and gifted hands – Peanut Butter Wolf, J.Rocc, Dam-Funk, Mayer Hawthorne (we still call him Haircut, the DJ) and James Pants – all in together with each name contributing a 10-minute mix of music for Saint Valentine’s Day. DãM-FunK is the subject in filmmaker Dan Canyon’s Stolen Moments over at SpineTV. In the clip, the boogie funk ambassador speaks on ladies, influences, UFO’s (referenced on “Brookside Park”) and making music for extraterrestrials, musical progression and Stevie Nicks, Patrice Rushen & Flying Lotus as parts of his dream line-up for a performance.
