“Lyrics?” – Review Of Sadat X’s Brand New Bein’

05.20.09 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Prop Jay

When Brand Nubian were going through their rough patch, Sadat X’s Wild Cowboys allowed the man to prove he was valuable to the game without fellow group members Grand Puba and Lord Jamar. Brand Nubian soon returned with Foundation which was mostly viewed as a disappointment and things have not been good ever since, especially during that time he had to spend at Riker’s Island for gun charges. Out of jail for just under 2 years, Sadat X hits us with his not-so-much anticipated album Brand New Bein’, a similar sound to previous work, which coincides with being the album’s ultimate downfall. Tony Touch, KRS-One, & Buckshot – “Toca Tuesdays Freestyle” Video

04.28.09 Written by MZ

Buckshot, KRS-One & Dru Ha stopped by Tony Touches “Toca Tuesdays” show on Shade 45 last week to promote their collaborative album Survival Skills coming out on Duck Down August 25th. I caught the tail end leaving work on Sunday and tuned in just before they started freestyling. It’s worth a view just to see how seamlessly Buckshot flips his flow when Touch switched up the beat.  Second part’s after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

KRS-One & Buckshot – “Robot”

04.23.09 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Jason Hortillas

The pairing of Krs-One and Buckshot seemed unlikely to me, especially for an entire album but maybe the duo will try to prove me wrong. Survival Skills (Duckdown Records) features production from Black Milk, Marco Polo, Khrysis, Illmind and 9th Wonder and a whole bunch of guest rappers as well. The leak of their first single, “Robot,” interestingly enough comments on the usage of Autotune with Buckshot pointing out Read the rest of this entry »

Win With Brooklyn Bodega & The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

07.04.08 Written by Gotty™

Over the past four years, Brooklyn Bodega has been instrumental in working the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Along the way, we (as well as many of you) have been a part of it as well – watching it expand, the list of performers & offerings increase, and the festival as a whole grow beyond what anyone could have hoped. Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival Media Mixer. 6.23.08. NYC.

07.01.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Khalid Strickland

On the real, I’m from Brooklyn. Let me re-phrase that: “Um frum Brooklyn”. Pre-gentrification Brooklyn, that is. I didn’t move there once things got sweet like the aliens who claim it as their own now. When I did my tour of duty on the block, people weren’t in front of coffee shops, sippin’ lattes and eating cucumber sandwiches. Back then, niggas held down the corners puttin’ in work, and the drinks we sipped were in 40-ounce bottles, fuck a Starbucks “Grande” cup.

Being that I’m a pillar of the community, it’s only right that I attended the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival’s Media Mixer. For the uninitiated, the BK Hip Hop Festival is an annual concert sponsored by multi-media marketing firms, The Room Service Group and Brooklyn Bodega. The three-day event is held in parks & clubs throughout Downtown BK, of course; past performers include Ghostface Killah, Lupe Fiasco, Sean Price, Talib Kweli, and a slew of other notables. This year’s festival, which takes place on Saturday, July 12th, is also championship caliber and will feature a well-balanced line-up of seasoned veterans and hungry, talented rookies. KRS-ONE, DJ Premier and Buckshot anchor a concert which also boasts the likes of Mickey Factz, Blue & Exile, 88 Keys, Homeboy Sandman and J. Period. BK’s own music-video pioneer and Festival host, the legendary Uncle Ralph McDaniel’s, personifies the phrase coined by Pimpin’ Ken Ivey: “Internationally Known, Nationally Recognized and Locally Respected”.

Buckshot Ralph McDaniels

The good folks at Brooklyn Bodega and The Room Service Group put together the Media Mixer so that journalists could chop it up with the BHF’s performing artists. To sweeten the deal, the famous Brooklyn Brewery provided enough free lager to intoxicate a small army. Buckshot, another genuine Brooklynite, showed up to meet the press. Paid Dues Concert. Nokia Theater. NYC. 6.4.08.

06.11.08 Written by TSSCrew

Words By Khalid Strickland

The traveling, independent Hip-Hop festival known as Paid Dues rolled into NYC’s Nokia Theater last week and it was quite an event to say the least. The concert’s line-up was rock solid: Rakim, GZA, Buckshot, Murs (accompanied by his frequent co-defendant, 9th Wonder), Kidz In The Hall and Blackalicious. Guerilla Union, the organization that also coordinates the Rock The Bells tour, gets mucho props for making this joint happen. The Nokia’s been host to some pretty hot Hip-Hop shows this past year; the EPMD jump-off in April, which I documented at TSS, was particularly off-the-chain. How did Paid Dues rate? Let’s find out…

The Crowd

Early on in the show, the size of the crowd was respectable, but sparse. Even the White fans were on C.P.T. But as the show progressed, the crowd began to swell. By the time Buckshot performed midway through the concert, the Nokia was packed. There were hordes of fans rocking Wu-Tang shirts in attendance; The “W” will never die, record sales be damned. The concert-goers were cool, though, no tension whatsoever. People were there to enjoy themselves, not to ice-grill each other and throw down. That can be fun too, but not once at Paid Dues did I feel the slightest need to grab my shank (Nokia security must really trust the press).

While I was at the bar copping another Guinness, I noticed Billy Danze of M.O.P. and his manager Laz-E-Laz standing about four feet away from me, ordering drinks. You’d probably think otherwise after listening to M.O.P.’s music, but Billy was amicable and *gasp* even had a smile on his face. Fans kept walking up, showing crazy love, and he didn’t hook off on anybody. It reminded me of back in the day, when you’d be hanging at clubs like The Ritz or The Grand on any given night and famous rappers were partying amongst the crowd, without fear. I got all misty eyed and shit.

Chick Factor

Being that this was an independent Hip-Hop festival, I didn’t know how many babes would show up. I’m sure GZA and Murs have their fair share of female fans, but if this were a concert that featured Fabolous and LL Cool J, you know there’d be flocks of birds. Plus, the Nokia Theater is located in Times Square, where all the movie theaters are. So I figured all the ladies would skip the concert and peep Sex and the City instead. The aforementioned EPMD concert had a nice amount of hot women, but I went to that gig with wifey, and she’s always cock-blockin’. Read the rest of this entry »

“No Comparison” – Review Of Buckshot & 9th Wonder’s The Formula

04.24.08 Written by Jason H.

In the video for “Go All Out,” Eddie Murphy’s brother Charlie Murphy and Buckshot take a stab at Buck’s backpack, now infamously associated with the term “backpacker.” Charlie claims he was Buck’s inspiration to sport the accessory in the 1993 “Who Got The Props” video, but I highly doubt that. Here I go dropping my old man again but I remember that backpack fad (See Method Man – Yo! MTV Raps Finale Episode) and seeing heavy doses of kids rocking their Jansport’s. Class apparently was not the destination.

Influence can be a mother and one of those kids watching that “Props” video was 9th Wonder. Maybe he rocked a backpack too but while developing his own niche as a beat smith, you can’t argue his influence by the Boot Camp sound (He’s admitted he can recite Buckshot lines from memory). Evidently this is proven from Buckshot & 9th Wonder on The Formula (Duck Down). Read the rest of this entry »
