Life has been noticeably different since the iPhone appeared in my life. With the BlackBerry, listening to music was next to impossible with a trackball whose sole intention was to run my blood pressure sky high. Now, with the iPhone, listening to songs in the car as they overpopulate my e-mail is second nature. This new record from Blake Kelly crossed my path while riding back home last Saturday night. With the weather taking a permanent turn for the warmer (in some parts of the country), the return of one of America’s favorite past times is upon us – loud music, low windows and the open road. Now, I’m not saying go all Jason Peters and catch a charge, but music sounds better in the car for some unknown, but accepted reason. Blake Kelly is working on his newest audio compilation, Plane Mode, and the first look into the project is the bouncy and THC-friendly “Rolling.”

The song itself does not reinvent the wheel, change the course of Hip Hop history with its presence nor will it be enough to tip the scale and eventually convince Congress to legalize marijuana. That being said, however, it is worthy enough to burn a handful of J’s and/or blunts to because of its carefree nature. Before the aforementioned project’s release, Kelly will be teaming up with the DMV’s own DJ Soundwave for Who Is Blake Kelly? to reacclimate those familiar with his sound and those who were previously unaware. It’s almost summertime. Everybody needs theme music.

Blake Kelly – “Rolling”

Any true leaf blower will tell you “4:20″ is simply another day. That’s for the “commercial” smokers, if you will. For that exact reason, Blake Kelly dropped off his latest tape, Forest Fires, the next day, April 21. It comprised of a collection of songs he had been recording since his last project, Higher Education. One of the standout tracks was his collaboration with fellow start up Dave Coresh for “So High Pt. 2.”

Backed by a melodic production from Ya Money (and the influence of Mary Jane), Kelly takes a lyrical ride as he progresses on his career thus far – filled with co-eds, music and kush. Flying in from the Midwest, Coresh explains what life is like around his neck of the woods. And if recent events have explained, it’s nothing nice.

So if drug tests are the furthest thing from your mind, and an everyday love affair with Mary is your thing, take a hit (or three). Then hit play.
