All the news of rap groups and labels these days may center around Rick Ross and his Maybach Music Imprint, but the Black Hippy movement may very well be the best all around faction as far as talent is concerned. Ab-Soul will be releasing LongTerm: Mentality on April 5 and one of the standout tracks – let’s take a risk and call it early – features the rest of the squad (Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar) as they tag along for the ride on a track ironically called “Constipation.”

Thankfully we do no judge artists on the quality of their covers because I cannot say I’m a big fan of the visual. The song, however? Let’s just say fans of the Jadakiss/Styles P back and forth flow should eat this up.

Ab-Soul’s life has to be a little heady. His notoriety and skill have only grown over the past year, and show no signs of slowing. But instead of succumbing to the fast-paced lifestyle that this could entail, he prefers to lay it back with a bottle of “Moscato.” This smooth cut is a spiritual cousin to “P&P 1.5″ off Kendrick Lamar’s O(verly) D(edicated), featuring the same two talented emcees, a similar laid-back feel, and inspiration born from a little bit of alcohol. They’ve appeared on “best-of” lists across the blogosphere, worked with big names like Tech N9ne, Dr. Dre, and J. Cole and improved immeasurably in their abilities. Apparently, these much chagrined rap practitioners felt the need to separate themselves from their elder-statesman in order to carve own their own legacy, and for some – the move ended up working out just fine.
